Stress and anxiety associated with prenatal diagnosis
Best Practice & Research Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 2007Prior to any specific prenatal diagnostic procedure, the pregnant woman should be counselled about the indications for the procedure and how the diagnosis would inform care. In addition, the risks and limitations should be clearly spelt out. The availability of non-invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures such as sonography appears to have led to a ...

Handedness, prenatal stress and pregnancy complications
Neuropsychologia, 1988Two hundred and ninety children aged 2 yr were assessed for laterality on a number of preference and dexterity tasks. The mothers were interviewed about their child's pre- and perinatal history. Information was also obtained from hospital records about pregnancy and delivery stress and complications.

Protein peroxidation in the plasma of prenatally stressed rats
Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2004We studied the effect of prenatal stress on protein peroxidation in the plasma of rats during postnatal ontogeny. Oxidative destruction of proteins in prenatally stressed rats differed from that in control animals. These differences were most pronounced in postnatal ontogeny, i.e. during the development and maturation of CNS.

Prenatal and adult stress interplay — behavioral implications
Brain Research, 2010The origin of adult behavior and the possible pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders remain elusive, but extensive research indicates that interaction of genes and environment play a crucial role for adult phenotype. Differences in susceptibility may arise by earlier experiences and genomic variables, either alone or in combination. The acoustic startle

Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, 1998
This study examined the effects of exposure to prenatal stress on young and adult rats, and whether the concomitant administration of an anxiolytic neurosteroid, allopregnanolone (3-alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-pregnan-20-one), could ameliorate some of the behavioral dysfunctions associated with prenatal stress.

Consequences of Developmental Stress in Humans: Prenatal Stress
2012Stress is a phenomenon which can occur throughout the entire life span. There is ample evidence of prenatal programming, i.e., in utero experiences may have long-term consequences for the unborn child. In this chapter, human studies are reviewed regarding the impact of various sources of prenatal stress on various outcomes in infants.

Prenatal Diet and Stress Responsiveness
2011During the last 2 decades evidence suggesting a role for prenatal diet in the development of adult disease has built up. One of the mechanisms that has been proposed to mediate this association is fetal programming of the stress response. It has been hypothesized that poor nutritional circumstances during gestation can alter the set points of the ...
