Preservation Solutions for Solid Organ Transplantation
Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, 2006Solid organ transplantation was one of the greatest medical advances of the 20th century. Current preservation technology falls short of maintaining organs ex vivo in perpetuity. This review examines the biochemical basis of organ degradation in response to ischaemia, preservation solution composition and potential future organ preservation technology.

Additive Solutions for Better Blood Preservation
CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1987For several decades the standard blood preservative solution consisted of citrate, dextrose, and, later, phosphate (ACD and CPD). In 1978 a new solution containing adenine (CPDA-1) was introduced to permit extension of red cell shelf life from 21 to 35 days.

Effects of Preservation Solutions on Blood
2006Celsior solution does not aggregate erythrocytes, whereas Wisconsin solution massively does. This feature could make CS preferable to UW during organ procurement.

Improved heart preservation with UW preservation solution.
The Journal of heart transplantation, 1989Despite the good clinical results obtained with the current heart preservation techniques, these methods need to be improved. The UW solution has provided excellent preservation for the pancreas, kidney, and liver after extended cold ischemic storage times.

Evaluation of Eight Preservation Solutions for Endothelial in situ Preservation
Transplantation, 2004Non-heart-beating donors (NHBDs) have the potential to reduce the increasing numbers of patients on kidney and liver graft waiting lists. One problem observed with kidneys obtained from NHBDs is the endothelial injury seen on protocol core biopsies after implantation.

Transplantation, 1992
Fifty-two rat pancreas transplants were performed to investigate which components of the UW solution were essential for successful pancreas preservation. LEW rats were used and the pancreata stored at 4 degrees C for 48 hr after flushing with commercial UW solution (ViaSpan, DuPont Pharmaceuticals) or a number of simplified solutions. Following storage

Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1993
Orthotopic liver transplantation has become the accepted treatment for end-stage liver disease in children. To evaluate the efficacy of the University of Wisconsin (UW) preservation solution in pediatric liver transplantation, a group of 34 livers preserved with UW solution was compared in a nonrandomized fashion with a historical control group of 34 ...

Preservatives in nebulizer solutions
Pharmacotherapy, 1998Edetate disodium (EDTA) and benzalkonium chloride (BAC) are often present as preservative or stabilizing agents in nebulizer solutions used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Benzalkonium chloride is a potent bronchoconstrictor when inhaled in concentrations similar to those in which it is present in these solutions.

CLINICAL ORGAN PRESERVATION WITH UW SOLUTION

New organ preservation solutions.
Kidney international. Supplement, 1992In 1969 we described a method for kidney preservation that used a brief flush with a new "intracellular" solution followed by ice storage. This paper stimulated research into optimizing solution composition culminating in the UW solution which is now the accepted standard.
