Prior distributions for variance parameters in hierarchical models [PDF]

open access: yes
Various noninformative prior distributions have been suggested for scale parameters in hierarchical models. We construct a new folded-noncentral- t family of conditionally conjugate priors for hierarchical standard deviation parameters, and then consider

Establishing an Apheresis Medicine Program in a Resource‐Constrained Setting: A 5‐Year Experience From Lagos, Nigeria

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Establishing a comprehensive apheresis medicine program in a resource‐constrained setting presents significant structural, financial, and logistical challenges. Despite the growing clinical importance of apheresis services globally, published experience from sub‐Saharan Africa remains sparse.

Bayesian bin distribution inference and mutual information

open access: yes, 2005
We present an exact Bayesian treatment of a simple, yet sufficiently general probability distribution model. We consider piecewise-constant distributions' P(X) with uniform (second-order) prior over location of discontinuity points and assigned chances ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Effect of prior distributions on accuracy of genomic breeding values for two dairy traits

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2013
The ideal method to estimate direct genomic values (DGV) would calculate the conditional mean of the breeding value given the genotype of individuals at each quantitative traits locus (QTL). In this study we compare accuracies of DGV obtained using three

Bayesian Estimation of the Reliability Function of a Two-parameter Cauchy Distribution. [PDF]

open access: yesThe Egyptian Statistical Journal, 1998
In this paper, we obtained an approximate Bayes procedure for the estimation of the reliability function of a two-parameter Cauchy distribution under a predictive distribution approach of Sinha and Guttman (1988) using Jeffrys' non ...

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Improving the mobility performance of autonomous unmanned ground vehicles by adding the ability to ‘sense/feel‘ their local environment

open access: yes, 2007
This paper explores how a ‘learning‘ algorithm can be added to UGV’s by giving it the ability to test the terrain through ‘feeling‘ using incorporated sensors, which would in turn increase its situational awareness.
