Extinction in a branching process: Why some of the fittest strategies cannot guarantee survival [PDF]
The fitness of a biological strategy is typically measured by its expected reproductive rate, the first moment of its offspring distribution. However, strategies with high expected rates can also have high probabilities of extinction. A similar situation

Minimizing the Probability of Lifetime Exponential Parisian Ruin [PDF]
We find the optimal investment strategy in a Black-Scholes market to minimize the probability of so-called {\it lifetime exponential Parisian ruin}, that is, the probability that wealth exhibits an excursion below zero of an exponentially distributed time before the individual dies.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

EXOSC10, an essential nuclear RNA exosome‐associated 3′‐5′ exoribonuclease, is inhibited by the anticancer drug 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU), and EXOSC10 depletion increases 5‐FU sensitivity. The colon‐cancer variant EXOSC10S402T, located in a proteolysis motif, is stable and nuclear but nonfunctional in vivo.

Practical approaches to the estimation of the ruin probability in a risk model with additional funds
We deal with a generalization of the classical risk model when an insurance company gets additional funds whenever a claim arrives and consider some practical approaches to the estimation of the ruin probability.

On a discrete-time risk model with delayed claims and dividends [PDF]
In this paper, we study the discounted free Gerber–Shiu function for the compound binomial risk model with by-claims and randomized dividend policy. Specifically, explicit expression for the discounted free Gerber–Shiu function is obtained.

Exemplification of Ruin Probabilities [PDF]
The following numerical values of ruin probabilities, Ψ(u, T) for finite times T, have been calculated by the method proposed in “Analytical steps towards a numerical calculation of the ruin probability for a finite period when the risk process is of the Poisson type or of the more general type studied by Sparre Andersen”, presented to this colloquium ...

ABSTRACT Objective Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most debilitating and common muscular dystrophies. Despite its severity, no approved therapy exists for FSHD patients. However, several therapeutic candidates are currently under development, and some have recently entered clinical trials, marking the need for reliable ...

Exit problem of a two-dimensional risk process from the quadrant: Exact and asymptotic results
Consider two insurance companies (or two branches of the same company) that divide between them both claims and premia in some specified proportions. We model the occurrence of claims according to a renewal process. One ruin problem considered is that of
