Seismic pulse propagation with constant Q and stable probability distributions

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1997
The one-dimensional propagation of seismic waves with constant Q is shown to be governed by an evolution equation of fractional order in time, which interpolates the heat equation and the wave equation.

Contractive adjustment in Mexico, 1982-1989

open access: yesPSL Quarterly Review, 2013
The work assesses the macroeconomic effects of the IMF’s contractive adjustment strategy in Mexico’s recent evolution, while raising some theoretical challenges to several of the underlying assumptions that have sustained the Mexican government’s recent ...

Differential Evolution with Estimation of Distribution for Worst-Case Scenario Optimization

open access: yesMathematics, 2021
Worst-case scenario optimization deals with the minimization of the maximum output in all scenarios of a problem, and it is usually formulated as a min-max problem.

Statistical Models of the Protein Fitness Landscape: Applications to Protein Evolution and Engineering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Understanding the protein fitness landscape is important for describing how natural proteins evolve and for engineering new proteins with useful properties.

Application of differential evolution to power system stabilizer design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Includes synopsis.Includes bibliographical references. In recent years, many Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have been proposed to optimally tune the parameters of the PSS. GAs are population based search methods inspired by

Symbiotic Composition and Evolvability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Several of the Major Transitions in natural evolution, such as the symbiogenic origin of eukaryotes from prokaryotes, share the feature that existing entities became the components of composite entities at a higher level of organisation. This composition

Pattern and Process: Evolution of Troglomorphy in the Cave-Planthoppers of Australia and Hawai’i ‒ Preliminary Observations (Insecta: Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Cixiidae)

open access: yesActa Carsologica, 2007
The evolution of troglobites comprises three distinct problems: cave colonization by an epigean ancestor, the evolution of troglomorphies, and intra-cave speciation.

Hold-Up Problems in International Gas Trade: A Case Study

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
The infrastructure required for international natural gas trade is considerable, which often leads to hold-up problems and supply disruptions. This study discusses disruptions of gas supply from Algeria, Indonesia, Russia, and Turkmenistan since the ...

Continuous Dependence on Modeling for Related Cauchy Problems of a Class of Evolution Equations

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 1997
The authors investigate the Cauchy problem \(Pu_t+ Mu= F(t,u)\) on some interval \([0,T)\), under the initial datum \(u(0)= f\in H\), where \(P\) and \(M\) are linear operators with dense domain in the Hilbert space \(H\). \(F\) stands for a (nonlinear) map from \([0,T) \times H\) into \(H\).

On a class of abstract evolution equations related to the motion of a complexity-2 fluid [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We prove existence of a unique classical solution, global in time for sufficiently small data, to a class of abstract evolution equations related to complexity-2 fluids, as well as asymptotic stability.
