Multiple low dose streptozotocin‐induced diabetes as a model for studying autoimmune diabetes in humans

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Multiple low dose streptozotocin‐induced diabetes is a valuable animal model of diabetes type 1. It should be improved by further research on autoantigens, microbiota and mucosal immune cells from the gut, but also from other organs. Abstract The autoimmune response directed against pancreatic β cells is the most essential pathogenic process in type 1 ...

Diosgenin ameliorates silica‐induced tuberculosis in rats

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Silicosis increases susceptibility to tuberculosis due to impaired macrophage function and oxidative stress. This study demonstrates that diosgenin, a steroidal saponin, significantly inhibits Mycobacterium smegmatis (IC₅₀ = 0.006 μg/mL), reduces lung fibrosis, and restores antioxidant enzyme levels (↑SOD, ↑CAT, ↓MDA) in silica‐exposed rats ...

Proinflammatory cytokine responses in patients with psoriasis

European Cytokine Network, 2014
Psoriasis is one of the most common, immune-mediated, chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Proinflammatory cytokines play an important pathogenetic role at a local level. To assess whether the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, IL-22 and TNF-α are released systemically during psoriasis.Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated ...

Aging and proinflammatory cytokines

Current Opinion in Hematology, 2001
Aging is associated with increased inflammatory activity reflected by increased circulating levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6, cytokine antagonists and acute phase proteins in vivo. Epidemiologic studies suggest that chronic low-grade inflammation in aging promotes an atherogenic profile and is related to age-associated disorders (eg, Alzheimer disease ...

Neuroinflammation and Proinflammatory Cytokines in Epileptogenesis

Molecular Neurobiology, 2022
Increasing evidence corroborates the fundamental role of neuroinflammation in the development of epilepsy. Proinflammatory cytokines (PICs) are crucial contributors to the inflammatory reactions in the brain. It is evidenced that epileptic seizures are associated with elevated levels of PICs, particularly interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor ...

Catabolic proinflammatory cytokines

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 1998
Catabolic proinflammatory cytokines play a key role in mediating biochemical changes associated with many pathophysiological states. The present review emphasizes the role of this type of cytokine in inflammation and cachexia. Additionally, it reviews the role of one of these mediators in the induction of insulin resistance by dealing with some of the ...

Proinflammatory cytokines and skeletal muscle

Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 2004
Metabolic abnormalities leading to a catabolic syndrome with progressive muscular atrophy are a common final stage of various chronic diseases. Proinflammatory cytokines have been suggested both to induce and mediate local catabolic mechanisms. This review focuses on the role of proinflammatory cytokines in the development of muscular abnormalities ...
