Brain Projects Plot Neural Connections
Although BAM will study neuronal activity in the brain, the HCP is providing a static anatomy of the brain. In 2010, the NIH awarded $40 million to start the HCP. One project, dubbed the microconnectome, received $8.5 million over 3 years to examine the synapses and cells down to the resolution of 100 cubic microns.

Many-Body Quantum Catalysts for Transforming Between Phases of Matter
A catalyst is a substance that enables otherwise impossible transformations between states of a system, without being consumed in the process. In this work, we apply the notion of catalysts to many-body quantum physics.

Cultural-historical and cognitive approaches to understanding the origins of development of written speech [PDF]
We present an analysis of the emergence and development of written speech, its relationship to the oral speech, connections to the symbolic and modeling activities of preschool children – playing and drawing.

Balanced generalized weighing matrices and their applications
Balanced generalized weighing matrices include well-known classical combinatorial objects such as Hadamard matrices and conference matrices; moreover, particular classes of BGW -matrices are equivalent to certain relative difference sets.

Boundary transitions from a single round of measurements on gapless quantum states
Measurements can qualitatively alter correlations and entanglement emerging in gapless quantum matter. We show how a single round of measurements on gapless quantum systems can, upon rotating the measurement basis, induce nontrivial transitions ...
