Adaptation to harshness is fundamentally different from the adaptive stress response: Results from a 20‐year‐long case study in African striped mice

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Animals in harsh environments rely on specialised adaptations. Two decades of field research on African striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) in the Succulent Karoo semi‐desert reveal a distinct ‘harshness response’—marked by reduced metabolism and glucocorticoid levels—that differs fundamentally from the classic stress response.

Low‐Coverage Whole‐Genome Analysis of Population Structure, Bottlenecks, and Selection in Indiana Bats Before and After White‐Nose Syndrome

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Conservation successes for the endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) in the early 2000s were largely reversed by white‐nose syndrome (WNS), a novel fungal disease that emerged in North America in 2006. Impacts have been variable among Indiana bat colonies leading to uncertainty regarding the full impact of WNS on this species.

Salivary Proteomic Signatures in Pregnant Women With Excessive Gingival Bleeding

open access: yesOral Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This observational, cross‐sectional, and analytical study aimed to explore the pathophysiological mechanisms of gingivitis in pregnancy by analyzing the salivary proteomic profile according to gingival bleeding status. Materials and Methods Pregnant women at the 27th week of gestation or beyond were categorized into two groups: those

Exploring neuronal mechanisms of osteosarcopenia in older adults

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The mechanosensitive osteocytic network within the bone matrix acts as a receptor and plays a crucial role in the functional adaptation of bone to mechanical loading. Through mechanotransduction, osteocytes convert mechanical impulses into electrical signals, which are transmitted via afferent nerves to sympathetic preganglionic ...

Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Leading to a Diagnosis of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1

open access: yesDEN Open, Volume 6, Issue 1, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are rare but occasionally encountered. They are generally highly vascularized solid tumors, often round in shape with clear boundaries, defined contours, and a homogeneous internal structure. However, they can also present with atypical features, such as cystic degeneration, hemorrhage, calcification, and ...

Prolactin protects hippocampal neurons against H2O2-induced neurotoxicity by suppressing BAX and NOX4 via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are physiological byproducts of neuronal metabolism. However, an imbalance between ROS generation and antioxidant capacity, often driven by dysregulated pro-oxidant enzymes like nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate ...
