Chinese Zero Pronoun Resolution

ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing, 2019
Chinese zero pronoun (ZP) resolution plays a critical role in discourse analysis. Different from traditional mention-to-mention approaches, this article proposes a chain-to-chain approach to improve the performance of ZP resolution in three aspects. First, consecutive ZPs are clustered into coreferential chains, each working as one independent anaphor ...

Pronoun resolution and discourse models.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1992
Psychological investigations of pronoun resolution have implicitly assumed that the processes involved automatically provide a unique referent for every pronoun. We challenge this assumption and propose a new framework for studying pronoun resolution.

Hobbs’ Algorithm for Pronoun Resolution in Portuguese

2007
Automatic pronoun resolution may improve the performance of natural language systems, such as translators, generators and summarizers. Difficulties may arise when there is more than one potential candidate for a referent. There has been little research on pronoun resolution for Portuguese, if compared to other languages, such as English.

Portuguese Pronoun Resolution: Resources and Evaluation

2008
Despite being one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world, Portuguese remains a relatively resource-poor language, for which only in recently years NLP tools such as parsers, taggers and (fairly) large corpora have become available. An algorithm for zero pronoun resolution in Bulgarian

Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Systems and Technologies, 2013
This paper presents an algorithm for identifying the noun phrase antecedents of zero pronouns in Bulgarian. The algorithm applies to syntactic representation in XML format, generated by context-free grammar parser. Like the parser, the algorithm is implemented in Java.

Dialogue focus tracking for zero pronoun resolution

Proceedings of the 2015 Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics: Human Language Technologies, 2015
We take a novel approach to zero pronoun resolution in Chinese: our model explicitly tracks the flow of focus in a discourse. Our approach, which generalizes to deictic references, is not reliant on the presence of overt noun phrase antecedents to resolve to, and allows us to address the large percentage of “non-anaphoric” pronouns filtered out in ...

Dynamics of multiple pronoun resolution

This dissertation explores the mechanisms underlying multiple pronoun resolution in comparison to single pronoun resolution, focusing on differences in referential structure ? whether all or only one of the referents in the preceding clause are mentioned with a pronoun. This dissertation aims to answer four questions: (i) whether and how the process of

Chinese Overt Pronoun Resolution: A Bilingual Approach

Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2014
Much research has been done on the problem of English pronoun resolution, but there has been relatively little work on the corresponding problem of Chinese pronoun resolution. While pronoun resolution in both languages remains a challenging task, Chinese pronoun resolution is further complicated by (1) the lack of publicly available ...
