Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Genetic Diversity of Non‐Typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae Carriage: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Non‐typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae (NT‐Sp) strains lack detectable capsules and are often missed by traditional serotyping. While associated primarily with asymptomatic carriage, NT‐Sp has emerged as a key player in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene dissemination and serotype replacement in the post‐vaccine era. This systematic

Mechanisms of Resistance, Insights From Case Reports, and Future Prospects in Mycobacteriophage Therapy

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Volume 56, Issue 4, August 2026.
Evolution of drug‐resistant mycobacterial infections warrants renewed efforts in identifying more efficient preventive and control strategies as well as alternative treatment options. Interest in phage therapy is regaining significant traction, especially in cases of failed conventional therapy.

Prophages and satellite prophages are widespread in Streptococcus and may play a role in pneumococcal pathogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Abstract Prophages (viral genomes integrated within a host bacterial genome) can confer various phenotypic traits to their hosts, such as enhanced pathogenicity. Here we analyse >1300 genomes of 70 different Streptococcus species and identify nearly 800 prophages and ...

Prophage induction is enhanced and required for renal disease and lethality in an EHEC mouse model.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2013
Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), particularly serotype O157:H7, causes hemorrhagic colitis, hemolytic uremic syndrome, and even death. In vitro studies showed that Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2), the primary virulence factor expressed by EDL933 (an O157 ...

Recent Advances in the Molecular Mechanisms of Bacterial Anti‐Phage Defence Systems

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 8, August 2026.
Panoptes as an example for an antiphage system consists of OptS producing a cyclic dinucleotide that prevents activation of OptE, a transmembrane protein. Phage T4 infection introduces the sponge protein Acb2 that adsorbs the cyclic dinucleotide thus activating OptE which disrupts the cell membrane aborting phage infection.

Genotyping and characterization of prophage patterns in clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2019
Objective Staphylococcus aureus is considered an important pathogen with a variety of virulence factors in communities and hospitals all around the world. Prophage typing is a practical technique for categorizing this bacterium. In this study, we focused

Active Lysogeny in Listeria Monocytogenes Is a Bacteria-Phage Adaptive Response in the Mammalian Environment

open access: yesCell Reports, 2020
Summary: Some Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) strains harbor a prophage within the comK gene, which renders it inactive. During Lm infection of macrophage cells, the prophage turns into a molecular switch, promoting comK gene expression and therefore Lm ...

Tiny carriers, big impact: How Fusobacterium nucleatum extracellular vesicles drive oral diseases and beyond

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, Volume 4, Issue 4, July 2026.
This review explores how Fusobacterium nucleatum extracellular vesicles drive local oral diseases and distal pathologies via sophisticated cross‐compartment cross talk. It highlights the transformative potential of these “tiny carriers” as next‐generation molecular intermediaries for advanced health monitoring and innovative bio‐interventions by ...

AcrIIA8 is a putative phage structural protein of the HTJ2 family that does not inhibit Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Anti‐CRISPR (Acr) proteins are phage‐encoded anti‐defense factors that suppress CRISPR‐Cas immunity in bacteria. AcrIIA8 was previously identified as an inhibitor of Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 (SpyCas9) through functional assays of metagenomic libraries. Here, we report that AcrIIA8 does not inhibit SpyCas9 in biochemical assays under a range
