Needle‐scope guided surgical correction of pectus excavatum in a kitten

open access: yesVeterinary Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To describe the practicality and utility of performing corrective surgery for pectus excavatum (PE) while guided by a minimally invasive small gauge needle‐scope in a kitten. Study design Case report. Animal An 8‐week‐old, 0.8 kg, male intact, domestic short hair cat. Methods Bloodwork, radiography, surgical report, and postoperative

Cardiac conduction system and the electrocardiogram of the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) shares a common terrestrial ancestor with whales (Cetacea) and has independently evolved similar physiological adaptations to their aquatic lifestyle. Although several studies have explored the electrical signalling in whale hearts, the understanding of the conduction system and electrical ...

Human brain imaging with high‐density electroencephalography: Techniques and applications

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Recent technological advances have elevated high‐density electroencephalography (hdEEG) to the status of a reliable neuroimaging tool. This technique measures scalp potentials with high temporal resolution, which permits the non‐invasive detection and analysis of neural oscillations.

Hyperglycaemia‐induced reactive oxygen species production in cardiac ventricular myocytes differs among mammals

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend In rat and human adult ventricular myocytes, acute hyperglyceaemia (Glucose) causes increased glucose uptake (via GLUT) leading to O‐GlcNAcylation of CaMKII at Ser280, such that CaMKII activates NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) to increase cytosolic reactive oxygen species (ROS). That perturbs the ROS to Antioxidant (AntiOx) balance.
