Is there a role for cannabidiol in obesity, metabolic syndrome and binge eating?

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most abundant phytocannabinoids isolated from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is a lipophilic, non‐intoxicating substance that differently from Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9‐THC) does not present the typical profile of a drug of abuse.

Novel drugs approved by the EMA, the FDA and the MHRA in 2025: A year in review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract In the 2025 novel drug mini‐review, one can take a full measure of the ingenuity that underlies current drug design and development, despite the year's smaller harvest (46 novel drugs) compared to 2024 (53) and 2023 (70). 54% of the novel drugs are first‐in‐class (FIC).

Urine peptidome analysis in cardiorenal syndrome reflects molecular processes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is defined as the confluence of heart-kidney dysfunction. This study investigates the molecular differences at the level of the urinary peptidome between CRS patients and controls and their association to disease ...

Transforming growth factor-beta targets Formin-like 2 for Angiopoietin-like 4 secretion during the epithelial mesenchymal transition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Epithelial to Mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a highly dynamic process that plays a crucial role in tumor progression and metastasis. While remodelling of the actin cytoskeleton is a hallmark of EMT, the responsible actin regulating factors are less well

Proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Medical Association Journal, 2019
PCSK9 is a protease that degrades hepatic LDL-C receptors. Evolocumab and alirocumab are fully human monoclonal antibodies administered as subcutaneous injections that inhibit PCSK9, preserving receptor availability to clear circulating LDL-C.[1][1],[2][2] In randomized, placebo-controlled ...

Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Clinical Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Who Initiated Semaglutide 2.4 mg in the Real‐World: Results From the SCORE—Clinical ASCVD Study

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims To evaluate the association between semaglutide 2.4 mg and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) among adults with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and overweight/obesity without diabetes in real‐world clinical practice.

FGF23 is synthesised locally by renal tubules and activates injury-primed fibroblasts

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
In kidney disease, higher circulating levels of the mineral-regulating hormone fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23 are predictive of disease progression but direct pathogenic effects on the kidney are unknown. We sought evidence of local renal synthesis in

The role of ANGPTL3 in controlling lipoprotein metabolism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) is a secretory protein regulating plasma lipid levels via affecting lipoprotein lipase- and endothelial lipase-mediated hydrolysis of triglycerides and phospholipids.

High levels of serum cholesterol increase the risk of developing vessel co‐opting tumors in colorectal cancer liver metastases

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
High serum cholesterol is linked to colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) subtypes with poor survival (replacement pattern). Levels of cholesterol under 4 mmol·L−1 correlated with better survival and a desmoplastic pattern subtype. Furthermore, in vivo PCSK9 inhibitor evolocumab, which lowers cholesterol, reduced liver metastases.

An update on the landscape of collagen bioactive fragments

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
The remodeling of the extracellular matrix releases collagen bioactive fragments, which exert molecular functions and regulate numerous biological processes via several signaling pathways. Here, we summarize the latest findings describing the roles of major bioactive fragments from collagens I, IV, VI, and XVIII in various physiological and ...
