Exploring potentially synthetic genes related to diarrhetic shellfish toxins production in Prorocentrum sp. via comparative transcriptomics

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Harmful algal blooms (HABs), exacerbated by climate change and environmental disturbances, pose global challenges due to marine toxin contamination, particularly diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs).

Space, the final frontier: The spatial component of phytoplankton–bacterial interactions

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 122, Issue 3, Page 331-346, September 2024.
This review highlights the importance of spatial proximity between marine bacteria and unicellular algae in symbiotic associations. Bacterial strategies to achieve this proximity include attachment (irreversible or reversible) and directed or random encounters.

An Efficient and Scalable “Second Generation” Total Synthesis of the Marine Polyketide Limaol Endowed with Antiparasitic Activity

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 30, Issue 40, July 16, 2024.
The apparently non‐thermodynamic cluster of skipped exo‐methylene substituents on the “northern” wing of limaol is not the Achilles heel of this unique dinoflagellate‐derived marine natural product; rather, the proper choice of protecting groups on the spiroketal core proved to be key for an efficient synthesis.

Effect of associated bacteria on growth and toxigenicity in cultured isolates of the dinoflagellates Prorocentrum lima from Mexico

open access: yes, 2019
Benthic dinoflagellates belonging to the genus Prorocentrum have a wide distribution, with Prorocentrum lima as the most commonly reported morphospecies. Some Prorocentrum species are Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) toxins producers. These toxins ...

Toward a synthesis of phytoplankton community composition methods for global‐scale application

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 22, Issue 4, Page 217-240, April 2024.
Abstract The composition of the marine phytoplankton community has been shown to impact many biogeochemical processes and marine ecosystem services. A variety of methods exist to characterize phytoplankton community composition (PCC), with varying degrees of taxonomic resolution. Accordingly, the resulting PCC determinations are dependent on the method

Comparison of bacterial communities among geographically distinct populations of the benthic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima

open access: yes, 2022
Members of the Prorocentrum lima species complex (PLSC) are most frequently found in high cell abundance in the tropics and sub-tropics and are almost invariably toxigenic.

Scientific opinion on marine biotoxins in shellfish in the Republic of Croatia

open access: yesFood Risk Assess Europe, Volume 2, Issue 2, April 2024.
Summary Marine biotoxins are thermostable, mostly non‐protein molecules with different chemical components. According to solubility, they are divided into water‐soluble (hydrophilic) and fat‐soluble (lipophilic). The regulations of the EU and the Republic of Croatia regarding the maximum limits (ML) in live shellfish cover several groups: azaspiracids (

Diversity and environmental drivers of toxic microalgae in coastal waters of Panama: ecological and public health implications

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) constitute an emerging ecological and public health concern in tropical coastal ecosystems, particularly where high biodiversity intersects with increasing anthropogenic pressures.

Toxicity screening of eight Prorocentrum lima (Dinophyceae) strains of coastal China

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning, caused by Okadaic acid (OA) and its analogues, threatens nearshore ecosystems and public health. This study systematically compared eight Prorocentrum lima strains isolated from China’s coastal waters with respect to ...
