Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Risk Aversion in International Relations Theory [PDF]

open access: yes
|When international relations theorists use the concept of risk aversion, they usually cite the economics conception involving concave utility functions.

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Prospect/Refuge theory: An experimental approach

open access: yes, 1993
Viewed qualitatively, Jay Appleton's prospect/refuge theory is intuitively attractive. Viewed quantitatively, can it be substantiated and is it useful? This study aims to substantiate the theory.

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Cumulative Prospect Theory for Parametric and Multiattribute Utilities

open access: yes
In cumulative prospect theory models, different behavior concerning gains and losses is per-mitted. For gains different decision weights are assigned than for losses, and the shape of utility can reveal loss aversion.

PROSPECT THEORY AND DECISION WEIGHTS

open access: yes, 2014
[[abstract]]Proposed by Kahneman and Tversky as an alternative model for analyzing choice under risk and uncertainty, prospect theory is characterized by a value function and a probability-weighting function which overweights small probabilities but ...
