SUMMARY Histo‐cytological comparison of smears prepared from aspiration of prostates obtained by Franzén's technique from 100 autopsies and from 100 routine prostatectomy specimens, as well as of smears obtained from 128 patients prove that this form of investigation is reliable, although a proportion of inadequate smears or ...

Antibiotic Prophylaxis and Prostate Biopsy
Urologia Journal, 2014Objectives Perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is considered a safe and valid option from the urologist to prevent infective complications after prostate biopsy procedure. Prostatitis and aspiration biopsy cytology of prostate
Urology, 1988Aspiration biopsy of the prostate is contraindicated when active prostatitis is present. However, we have found prostatitis in 45.2 percent of 250 consecutive aspiration biopsy specimens, confirming that urologists have difficulty in distinguishing prostatitis from carcinoma on a clinical basis.

Early detection is critical to good management of prostate cancer patients. Markers for detection, such as prostate specific antigen (PSA), and prostate biopsy are paramount for establishing an efficient diagnosis. Patients having an initial biopsy should undergo an extended biopsy scheme incorporating at least 10-12 cores, while in those undergoing a ...

The aim of this paper is to review the different possibilities of performing biopsies on the prostate and to discuss indications, complications and the instruments to be used. Comments are then made on the results of an interactive discussion, mainly focussing on when a prostate biopsy should be performed and by whom, a urologist or radiologist.

Transrectal ultrasound guided (TRUS) prostate biopsies is the standard method in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The use of prostate specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal examination for prostate cancer screening has led to a dramatic increase in the number of TRUS guided biopsies.
