Transurethral prostatectomy

Transurethral prostatectomy is one of the most common operations today. In the United States, more than 90 per cent of patients with bladder outlet obstruction from BPH have their surgery done transurethrally. The operation is associated with a very low mortality rate, and the immediate postoperative results are excellent.

An operative technique is described for the enucleation of an adenomatous prostate through a transverse incision made across the bladder neck. Apart from the technical advantage of this approach, the results in 60 patients showed a shorter postoperative recovery and an earlier return of satisfactory bladder function than with other techniques.
