Signaling through protein kinase C
Frontiers in Bioscience, 1998Protein kinase C (PKC) comprises a large family of serine/threonine kinases which are activated by many extracellular signals. Inside the cell, PKCs are regulated by a variety of lipid second messengers, including the ubiquitous diacylglycerol and phosphatidylserine.

Protein kinase C (PKC) is a phospholipid-dependent protein kinase that plays important roles in various cellular functions. At least 11 PKC isozymes are known, and structural differences classify these isozymes into three groups, conventional PKC (cPKC), novel PKC (nPKC) and atypical PKC (aPKC).

Regulation of protein kinase C
Current Opinion in Cell Biology, 1997Protein kinase C has been in the spotlight since the discovery two decades ago that it is activated by the lipid second messenger diacylglycerol. Despite protein kinase C's enduring stage presence, the regulation and specific roles of its isozymes in defined cellular processes are still under intense investigation.

Protein Kinase C — Structural Studies
1988Protein kinase C was first reported by Nishizuka and colleagues. This group identified a histone kinase activity that was irreversibly activated by mM concentrations of Ca2+ (Takai et al., 1977), an effect shown to be due to proteolysis of the holoenzyme by contaminating Ca2+-activated neutral protease (Inoue et al., 1977).

Analyzing Protein Kinase C Activation
2002Protein kinase C isozymes play a central role in mediating signals from lipid second messengers. They are activated not only by the canonical diacyglycerol (DG) pathway, but also through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3 kinase) signaling pathway.

Protein Kinase C Isotypes in C. elegans
Journal of Biochemistry, 2002The protein kinase C (PKC) family, consisting of multiple isotypes, plays a major role in cellular signaling. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, four pkc genes, tpa-1, pkc-1, pkc-2 and pkc-3, have been identified and investigated. Molecular analysis of tpa-1, pkc-1, and pkc-2 has shown that each gene encodes multiple PKC isoforms with different ...
