A model of morphogenesis for protein secondary structures

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1991
This paper proposes a model for the expected probability distribution for a certain class of biological structures. In particular, a model is derived for the distribution of lengths of helices, sheets, turns, and coils as a function of the length of the structure divided by the length of the protein it is contained in.

On the pathway of the formation of secondary structures in proteins

Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, 2023
AbstractProtein structures are typically made up of well‐defined modules, called secondary structures. A hierarchical model of protein folding may start with the formation of five‐membered non‐covalently‐linked ring motifs involving O⋅⋅⋅C=O and N−H···N interactions connecting two consecutive peptide groups.

Secondary structure-based assignment of the protein structural classes

Amino Acids, 2008
Structural class categorizes proteins based on the amount and arrangement of the constituent secondary structures. The knowledge of structural classes is applied in numerous important predictive tasks that address structural and functional features of proteins. We propose novel structural class assignment methods that use one-dimensional (1D) secondary

The Prediction of the Secondary Structure of Proteins

1991
The prediction of the secondary structure of proteins has been widely applied to many areas of protein chemistry. This review gives an overview of its utility, reliability and application to a wide variety of problems in the life sciences.

Secondary structure prediction and protein design.

Biochemical Society symposium, 1990
For non-homologous proteins, and after cross-validation, the methods reviewed in this article exhibit a probability index (percentage of correctly predicted residues per predicted residues) of 59-65.5% according to the methods employed with a standard deviation of 7% for three conformational states: alpha-helix, beta-strand and coil.
