The capacity of plasma and serum to inhibit proteinases was recognized nearly a century ago and this phenomenon has been studied extensively since. It is not the purpose of this chapter to discuss the early work in any detail; this has been done elsewhere.1 In the last decade, the chemical identity of several plasma proteinase inhibitors has been ...

Plasma proteinase inhibitors account for about 10% of the total protein in plasma. They provide one mechanism for the control of proteinase activity, thus regulating many important biological reactions such as blood coagulation. Most plasma inhibitors are specific for one or a few related proteinases and control a particular biological event or pathway.

Biochemistry of Natural Proteinase Inhibitors
Angewandte Chemie International Edition in English, 1974AbstractThe natural inhibitors of proteolytic enzymes are proteins. These inhibitors associate reversibly with the enzymes to form stoichiometric proteināprotein complexes, in which substrateāanalogous association at the active center of the enzyme results in competitive inhibition of all catalytic functions.

Proteinase inhibitor in human tears
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure, 1971Abstract Human tears contain an inhibitor of trypsin and chymotrypsin. Its molecular weight, between 3000 and 9000, is probably similar to that of the inhibitor from bovine organs, namely 6500. On electrophoresis at pH 8.65 the inhibitor moves toward the cathode.
