A Comparative Analysis of the Ocular Microbiome: Insights into Healthy Eyes and Anophthalmic Sockets
The purpose of this study is to characterize the ocular surface microbiota of patients with an anophthalmic cavity. An eNAT with 1 mL of Liquid Amies Medium was used to collect samples.

Functional Constraints on Replacing an Essential Gene with Its Ancient and Modern Homologs
Genes encoding proteins that carry out essential informational tasks in the cell, in particular where multiple interaction partners are involved, are less likely to be transferable to a foreign organism.

Structure and evolution of chlorate reduction composite transposons. [PDF]
UnlabelledThe genes for chlorate reduction in six bacterial strains were analyzed in order to gain insight into the metabolism. A newly isolated chlorate-reducing bacterium (Shewanella algae ACDC) and three previously isolated strains (Ideonella ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

The developing infant gut microbiome affects metabolism, maturation of the gastrointestinal tract, immune system function, and brain development. Initial seeding of the neonatal microbiota occurs through maternal and environmental contact. Maternal diet,

ATP Is a Major Determinant of Phototrophic Bacterial Longevity in Growth Arrest
How bacteria transition into growth arrest as part of stationary phase has been well-studied, but our knowledge of features that help cells to stay alive in the following days and weeks is incomplete.

Influence of Crohn’s disease related polymorphisms in innate immune function on ileal microbiome [PDF]
We have previously identified NOD2 genotype and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) phenotype, as associated with shifts in the ileal microbiome (“dysbiosis”) in a patient cohort.

Dispensabilities of Carbonic Anhydrase in Proteobacteria [PDF]
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) (E.C. 4.2.1.1) is a ubiquitous enzyme catalysing interconversion between CO2 and bicarbonate. The irregular distribution of the phylogenetically distinct classes of CA in procaryotic genome suggests its complex evolutionary history in procaryotes.

The study presents an antibiotic‐free strategy using medical fabrics coated with supramolecular assemblies of polyarginine and hyaluronic acid. These coatings showed strong antimicrobial and anti‐biofilm activity in vitro and in vivo, achieving major bacterial load reductions, including against MRSA.
