Development of areolae and growth of the peripheral prothallus in the crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum: an image analysis study [PDF]

open access: yesSymbiosis, 2013
Areolae of the crustose lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum (L.) DC., are present on the peripheral prothallus (marginal areolae) and also aggregate to form confluent masses in the centre of the thallus (central areolae). To determine the relationships between these areolae and whether growth of the peripheral prothallus is dependent on the marginal ...

Prothallus Structure in Cladonia

Bryologist, 1996
All of the taxa in the lichen genus Cladonia that were examined for this study possess a prothallus. This non-lichenized, exclusively fungal component of the thallus was found in both organic and inorganic substrates. It was usually found in contact with the primary squamule or with another part of the photosynthetic thallus such as the podetium.

Genetic analysis of variation in the bracken prothallus

Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 1963
SUMMARY A form of prothallus without a meristem was investigated by methods involving cross- and self-fertilization. Analysis of the spores from the resulting sporophytes showed that control of the character was not directly attributable to the action of nuclear genes. A hypothesis of heritable cytoplasmic units is presented to explain the results.

Prothallus Morphology in Some Tectarioid Ferns

open access: yesAmerican Fern Journal, 1976
Among the tectarioid ferns, studies of the prothalli have been made in Arcypteris and Pleocnemia (Atkinson, 1970), Quercifilix (Nayar, 1960), and Tectaria (Kachroo, 1956; Mahabale & Venkateswaran, 1959; Stokey, 1960; Nayar & Kaur, 1964; Srivastava, 1968). In other tectarioid fern genera no such studies have been made, although Stokey (1960, pp.

Morphology of the Spores and Prothallus of Christiopteris tricuspis

American Fern Journal, 1967
Christiopteris Copel. is a small genus of epiphytic, polypodiaceous ferns that has morphologically better-known sporophytes than many other genera of leptosporangiate ferns. Three species are recognized, one of Sikkim, Annam, and Malaya, another of the Philippines, and the third of New Caledonia. Bower (1928, pp.

The prothallus ofPolystichum

Proceedings / Indian Academy of Sciences, 1969
In the 9 spp. ofPolystichum studied, a uniseriate germ filament is produced on spore germination. The anterior cells of the germ filament develop into a prothallial plate commonly before or sometimes after the terminal cell develops a papillate hair.
