"Role of Lectins in Interaction Between Parasites and the Important Insect Vectors"

open access: yesIranian Journal of Public Health, 2002
There is growing evidence that lectin-carbohydrate interactions can mediate the infection of parasites to their insect vector. Many insect species are host or vectors of protozoan or metazoan parasites that cause socially and economically important ...

Dicentrine, an Aporphine Alkaloid From Ocotea langsdorffii, Induces Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress in Leishmania (L.) infantum

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 23, Issue 8, August 2026.
Dicentrine, an aporphine alkaloid, exhibits potent in vitro antileishmanial activity against Leishmania species with high selectivity and low macrophage cytotoxicity. Mechanistic studies reveal that the compound triggers parasite death possibly by inducing mitochondrial membrane disruption and oxidative stress.

Murine T Cell‐Dependent Response Affects Leishmania amazonensis Amastigote Survival and Virulence

open access: yesCell Biology International, Volume 50, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Our group has previously described the infection course of Leishmania amazonensis in BALB/c and BALB/cnu/nu mice, which have distinct T‐cell dependent responses. In this study, lesion‐derived amastigotes exhibited differential protein expression in a host‐dependent manner.

Selenium‐Containing 1,4‐Naphthoquinone Derivatives Trigger Reactive Oxygen Species and Apoptosis in Triple‐Negative Breast Cancer Cells

open access: yesDrug Development Research, Volume 87, Issue 5, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Cancer ranks as a leading cause of death worldwide, demanding new affordable therapies. Nature offers a diverse array of bioactive scaffolds, including 1,4‐naphthoquinone, which serves as a precursor for numerous natural and synthetic compounds with potent antitumor properties.

Beyond the Cascade Dams: Scale‐Dependent Effects on Zooplankton Stability in River Ecosystems

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Cascade dams alter river zooplankton community stability, but how regulating factors act across local and regional spatial scales is poorly understood. Using field sampling and structural equation modeling, we revealed divergent scale‐dependent responses of zooplankton stability to dams—local stability depended on biodiversity, while regional stability

Molecular Genetics of Hepatozoon canis With a Note on Effect of Parasite on the Complete Blood Count Profile of Canine Hosts

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
A total of 654 blood samples were collected from healthy dogs in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in Pakistan and screened for the presence of Hepatozoon canis. Genetic diversity of the detected H. canis DNA, infection‐associated risk factors, and changes in the complete blood count of the host due to parasitic activity were also evaluated.

Environment and Host Genetics Drive Infection Outcomes in a Butterfly Host, but Do Not Interact With Each Other

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This study examined how host genetics and larval food plant environment influence parasite infection outcomes in monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) infected with the protozoan Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. We tested for genotype × environment interactions on infection status, infection burden, lifespan, and wing size.

Energy Allocation Explains How Protozoan Phenotypic Traits Change in Response to Temperature and Resource Supply

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
When cultures of the microorganism Tetrahymena pyriformis are transferred to environments with different temperature and resource levels, the phenotypic traits of the microorganisms—including cell size, metabolic rate, and movement speed—change.
