The Venous System of the Proventriculus of Duck (Anas domesticus)

The Japanese Journal of Veterinary Science, 1976
The proventriculus of duck is lacking in the V. proventricularis dextra and V. proventriculolienalis both of which are present in the chicken. In it the V. lienalis empties directly into the V. portae hepatis dextra. Therefore, most of the blood from the proventriculus of duck is drained by the well-developed V.

Filtering mechanism of the honey bee proventriculus

Physiological Entomology, 1986
ABSTRACT. The fine structure and function of a honey bee's ( Apis mellifera Linn.) proventriculus were studied by scanning electron microscopy and video‐recording. Our observations revealed that the proventriculus is used to engulf pollen and other particles which ...

Development of the diffuse endocrine system in the chicken proventriculus

Cell & Tissue Research, 1993
The development of endocrine cells in the chicken proventriculus has been investigated using light- and electron-microscopy in conjunction with silver and immunocytochemical techniques. The first morphologically detectable endocrine cells were found in 5-day-old embryos by electron microscopy.

Histochemical localization of carbonic anhydrase in fowl proventriculus

Experientia, 1980
The carbonic anhydrase activity in fowl proventriculus was studied by the histochemical method of Hanssom. The activity was observed in the mucose membrane cells and in proventricular gland cells. These results, about which there is disagreement in the literature, are discussed in the text.

Histochemical patterns in the proventriculus of the developing chick

Journal of Morphology, 1967
AbstractThe proventriculus of White Leghorn chick embryos (stages 29–45) newly‐hatched chicks, and adult chickens were frozen, sectioned in a cryostat and treated histochemically to identify localizations of alkaline and acid phosphatase, adenosine triphosphatase, 5‐nucleotidase, nucleotide‐diphosphatase, non‐specific glycerophosphatase, glucose‐6 ...

Action of serotonin on gastric (proventriculus) secretion in chickens

Comparative and General Pharmacology, 1971
Abstract 1. 1. Serotonin and duodenal distension inhibited basal, histamine-induced, and pentagastrin-induced gastric secretion in chickens. 2. 2. In UML-491 and reserpine pre-treated chickens, the inhibitory effects of duodenal distension and serotonin on gastric secretion were abolished. 3. 3.

The proventriculus of some trichopterous larvae

Journal of Zoology, 1967
A well‐developed proventriculus is present in larvae of the Polycentropodidae and Hydropsychidae. Its structure varies greatly between species but there is a common bilaterally symmetrical pattern based on a pair of posterior ventral folds. These are continuous with the sides of a ventral gap in the fold of foregut that invaginates into the midgut ...

The proventriculus of the worker honeybee and its differentiation

Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1990
The proventriculus (pv) of the honeybee regulates the flow of food from the crop into the midgut. It is a formation of the foregut intervening between the crop and the midgut and consists of four bulging pv folds forming a x-shaped lumen. At their ends (=lips) the folds bear filiform hairs forming a comb at their inner margins.

Postosmication of submucosal gland cells in the fowl proventriculus

Zeitschrift fr Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1963
The technique of postosmication has been applied to resting and histamine-stimulated cells in the submucosal glands of the fowl proventriculus. In resting cells, the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, the mitochondria, and occasional vacuole-containing bodies become impregnated, but the Golgi apparatus, or ‘Dalton complex’ remains unaffected.

The anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the avian proventriculus and ventriculus

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Exotic Animal Practice, 2003
Diseases affecting the proventriculus and ventriculus often present with similar clinical signs. It is important for the avian practitioner to be familiar with these diseases, their prevalence, and the species most commonly affected to judiciously prioritize the appropriate diagnostic techniques.
