To determine whether carotenoids can modulate xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in mice, catalytic activities of several phase I and phase II enzymes have been measured in liver microsomes and cytosol of male Swiss mice fed diets containing beta-carotene, beta-apo-8'-carotenal, canthaxanthin, or astaxanthin (300 mg/kg diet) or treated with 3 ...

Isolation and nature of echinenone, a provitamin A
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1956Abstract 1. 1. The carotenoid ketone echinenone has been isolated in crystalline form from sea-urchin gonads and identified as 4-keto-β-carotene. 2. 2. Echinenone was reduced with lithium aluminum hydride to the corresponding alcohol, isocryptoxanthin (4-hydroxy-β-carotene) that reverted to echinenone when submitted to Oppenauer oxidation.

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on stereoisomeric provitamins A. The provitamins A belong to the carotene-like polyene pigments, the so-called carotenoids. The four provitamins A which are practically most important are the three C 40 H 56 -hydrocarbons, α-, β-, and γ-carotene, and a monohydroxy-β-carotene, termed cryptoxanthin, C 40 H 55 .OH.

Alfalfa lipids were treated with p -toluenesulfonic acid in benzene under reflux; after saponification, chromatography of the unsaponifiable portion yielded a carotenoid having a single absorption maximum at 460 mμ in ethanol and hexane.

Zeacarotenes, new provitamins A from corn
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1959Abstract Two new provitamins A, designated as β-zeacarotene and β1-zeacarotene, were separated from extracts of yellow corn grain and from corn gluten. A companion pigment, which lacked vitamin A activity and was designated as α-zeacarotene, was obtained from the same extracts. From their physical properties and their behavior on reaction with iodine

Plant Sources of Provitamin A and Human Nutriture
Nutrition Reviews, 2009Hypovitaminosis A is a problem in many parts of the developing world. Beyond the stop-gap measures of capsule distribution and food fortification, increased consumption of accessible sources of vitamin A, specifically of the carotenoid provitamin A in yellow, orange, and green plants, has been promoted as the sustainable, long-term solution. However, a

The site and nature of provitamin D in birds
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1953Abstract 1. 1. The preen glands ( glandula uropygialis ) of ducks, geese, and chickens were examined for provitamin D content. No evidence for the occurrence of the provitamin was found. Therefore, the theory that birds obtain their vitamin D through preening no longer can be supported. 2. 2. A study of the distribution of provitamin D in the

Vitamin A and the provitamin A carotenoids
1998In 1915 McCollum and Davis isolated from animal fats and fish oils a ‘fat-soluble A’ that was essential to rats for growth and also cured eye disorders. In 1921 Bloch reported that a diet containing full milk and cod-liver oil cured xerophthalmia in infants and concluded that the eye affliction was due to the absence of the fat-soluble A in the diet ...
