Hybridization, Maternal Inheritance, and Evolutionary Time of Divergence of Endangered Species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the Xingu River. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We uncover recent hybridization dynamics among three endemic Hypancistrus species from the Xingu River, including the critically endangered H. zebra. Mitogenomic analyses reveal unidirectional maternal inheritance and recent evolutionary radiation (< 0.5 Ma), explaining their retained reproductive compatibility.

Apparent Digestibility Coefficients of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens), Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), and Blue Bottle Fly (Calliphora vicina) Insects for Juvenile African Catfish Hybrids (Clarias gariepinus × Heterobranchus longifilis). [PDF]

open access: yesAquac Nutr, 2022
A digestibility trial was conducted with African catfish hybrid juveniles in order to determine the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of different nutrients. The experimental diets contained defatted black soldier fly (BSL), yellow mealworm (MW), or fully fat blue bottle fly (BBF) meals, in a 70 : 30 ratio between the control diet and the ...

Effects of Low Concentration of Glyphosate-Based Herbicide on Genotoxic, Oxidative, Inflammatory, and Behavioral Meters in Danio rerio (Teleostei and Cyprinidae). [PDF]

open access: yesBiochem Res Int
The glyphosate herbicide is a pesticide widely used in the world and can contaminate soil, air, and water. The objective of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of a glyphosate‐based herbicide (GBH) in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were exposed to different concentrations of GBH (0, 50, 250, and 500 µg/L) for 96 hours.

Sustainable management and improvement of genetic resources for aquaculture

open access: yesJournal of the World Aquaculture Society, Volume 54, Issue 2, Page 364-396, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Effective genetic management of the ~700 aquatic species cultured globally should be addressed for aquaculture to make a significant contribution towards meeting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. This article aims to identify the current status and challenges relating to the management of farmed aquatic genetic resources (AqGR) and to ...

Protein‐Sparing Effect of α‐Lipoic Acid in Diets with Different Protein/Carbohydrate Ratios for the Oriental River Prawn, Macrobrachium nipponense

open access: yesAquaculture Research, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Carbohydrates are commonly used in aquaculture feed because they are the cheapest energy source. Promoting carbohydrate catabolism for energy production can increase the dietary protein utilization efficiency (i.e., a protein‐sparing effect). Alpha‐lipoic acid (α‐LA) is a cofactor of some rate‐limiting key enzymes (pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and α ...

Application of Microsatellite Markers in Conservation Genetics and Fisheries Management: Recent Advances in Population Structure Analysis and Conservation Strategies. [PDF]

open access: yesGenet Res Int, 2014
Microsatellites are the most popular and versatile genetic marker with myriads of applications in population genetics, conservation biology, and evolutionary biology. These are the arrays of DNA sequences, consisting of tandemly repeating mono‐, di‐, tri‐, and tetranucleotide units, which are distributed throughout the genomes of most eukaryotic ...
