A Prebiotic Synthesis of Pterins
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2015AbstractThe genesis of life on Earth is a hypothesis of evolutionary science that can be, at least partially, tested experimentally. The prebiotic synthesis of cofactors or coenzymes is a poorly explored issue, likely because their formation under plausible prebiotic conditions is not clear.

Photo-Oxidation of Unilamellar Vesicles by a Lipophilic Pterin: Deciphering Biomembrane Photodamage.
Langmuir, 2018Pterins are natural products that can photosensitize the oxidation of DNA, proteins, and phospholipids. Recently, a new series of decyl-chain (i.e., lipophilic) pterins were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated.

Quenching of the Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Pterin by Amino Acids
Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2018Unconjugated oxidized pterins accumulate in the skin of patients suffering from vitiligo and, under UVA irradiation, photosensitize the oxidation of amino acids.

Inhibition of xanthine oxidase by pterins
Free Radical Research, 1998The effect of a panel of pterins on xanthine oxidase was investigated by measuring formation of urate from xanthine as well as formazan production from nitroblue tetrazolium. The pterin derivatives, depending on their chemical structure, decreased urate as well as formazan generation: 200 microM neopterin and biopterin suppressed urate formation (90 ...

In situ detection of pterins by SERS
The Analyst, 2009Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been used to detect specific pterin molecules at sub-nanomolar concentrations. SERS is fast becoming a widely used technique for the sensitive and specific detection of multiple analytes. The information-rich and concentration-dependent spectra obtained from SERS make the technique ideally placed for high ...

Lipophilic Decyl Chain-Pterin Conjugates with Sensitizer Properties.
Molecular Pharmaceutics, 2017A new series of decyl chain [-(CH2)9CH3] pterin conjugates have been investigated by photochemical and photophysical methods, and with theoretical solubility calculations. To synthesize the pterins, a nucleophilic substitution (SN2) reaction was used for

Pterins in patients with rett syndrome
American Journal of Medical Genetics, 1986We have found normal concentrations of neopterin, monapterin, isoxanthopterin, biopterin and pterin in the urine of 10 patients with Rett syndrome, and normal values for total biopterin and neopterin in the blood of 4 subjects. Thus, there is no biochemical evidence of a generalized tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency in this syndrome.

Analysis and clinical significance of pterins
Journal of Chromatography B: Biomedical Sciences and Applications, 1988This review briefly describes the biochemistry of pterins, their involvement in pathological processes and the use of pterin measurement in diagnosis and monitoring of disease. Chromatographic and other methods of pterin analysis are detailed with particular emphasis being placed on the need for correct sample collection and handling.
