A targeted public: public services in fifteenth-century Ghent and Bruges [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Though the phrase 'public services' is a nineteenth-century invention, which was supported by a developed rhetoric of political economy, this article shows that the concept, practice and supply of such services could also be found in the medieval city ...

Methylation biomarkers can distinguish pleural mesothelioma from healthy pleura and other pleural pathologies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed and validated a DNA methylation–based biomarker panel to distinguish pleural mesothelioma from other pleural conditions. Using the IMPRESS technology, we translated this panel into a clinically applicable assay. The resulting two classifier models demonstrated excellent performance, achieving high AUC values and strong diagnostic accuracy.

The impact of public involvement in health research: what are we measuring? Why are we measuring it? Should we stop measuring it?

open access: yesResearch Involvement and Engagement, 2020
As public involvement in the design, conduct and dissemination of health research has become an expected norm and firmly enshrined in policy, interest in measuring its impact has also grown. Despite a drive to assess the impact of public involvement, and

Public health and public involvement

open access: yesCritical Public Health, 2008
Involving the public and stakeholders in public health initiatives is so much a routine part of public health that we hardly ever reflect upon it, either as a principle or a process.

Brownfields – public involvement [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on Ecology and the Environment, 94, 2006
It is the public’s money that provides critical leverage in Brownfields revitalization. Without grants for environmental assessments or cleanup funding or tax incentives, many Brownfields sites would remain unkempt. Municipal staffs are public employees whose actions in the Brownfields process must be transparent. Regulators too must share findings and

Detection of circulating tumor DNA in colorectal cancer patients using a methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We developed a cost‐effective methylation‐specific droplet digital PCR multiplex assay containing tissue‐conserved and tumor‐specific methylation markers. The assay can detect circulating tumor DNA with high accuracy in patients with localized and metastatic colorectal cancer.

Involving the public in research [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Dental Journal, 2014
Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is a rapidly developing initiative across biomedicine. It recognises that in addition to being the subjects of research, patients, the public and other users have an important contribution to make to the development, quality and relevance of research and to be advocates for oral health research.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.
