The notion of agency is a very complex one and has been used in the literature with a number of different meanings. In particular, starting from Giddens (1984), it has increasingly been adopted to qualify any action performed by participants in communication. In this chapter, I will propose a specific interpretation of the concept of agency.

Conference interpreting is perhaps the best-known branch of interpreting. Training normally includes a first degree in languages, followed by a period of intensive postgraduate specialised training. Although the standards required are the same, this recognised training route is not yet often available to public service interpreters.
