Tooth pulp transcapillary osmotic pressure in the dog

Abstract The purpose of these experiments was to measure the osmotic pressure across the tooth pulp capillary wall in dog canine teeth. Osmotic pressure was calculated by subtracting pulp tissue pressure from intracapillary pressure. Tissue pressure was measured by the pulp tap technique.

The pulp is a highly vascularized tissue situated in an inextensible environment surrounded by rigid dentin walls, with the apical foramina being the only access. The pulp vascular system is not only responsible for nutrient supply and waste removal but also contributes actively to the pulp inflammatory response and subsequent regeneration.

Sensory and reflex responses to tooth pulp stimulation in man

Experiments have been carried out to investigate whether all tooth pulp afferent nerves are capable of producing pain. Monopolar and bipolar stimuli were applied to teeth in human subjects and sensory thresholds determined. EMGs were recorded from the masseter and the anterior digastric muscles.
