Long-pulse, amplitude-modulated optical parametric oscillator

Applied Optics, 1996
A singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled LiNbO(3) is pumped by a Nd:YAG-based oscillator-modulator-amplifier source. This pump source, operating at 1.064 μm, provides the ability to control the temporal characteristics of the OPO waveform.

Pulse-Amplitude Modulation

2004
An information-bearing signal must conform to the limitations of its channel. While the bit streams we wish to transmit are inherently discrete-time, all physical media are continuous-time in nature. Hence, we need to represent the bit stream as a continuous-time signal for transmission, a process called ...

Pulse Amplitude and Frequency Modulation of Parathyroid Hormone in Plasma*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1989
Inconclusive reports on pulsatile secretion of PTH in man have been published. In this study PTH was measured by intact and PTH-(44-68) assays. Central venous blood sampling was performed every 2 min in 10 healthy men between 6-9 h and in 3 male patients with osteoporosis for over 6 h. Pulsatile PTH secretion was identified for healthy men and controls.

A Class of Distribution-Free Detectors for Pulse Amplitude Modulated Signals

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1979
A class of distribution-free detectors for M -ary pulse amplitude modulated digital signals in the presence of certain signal dependent interference and additive noise of unknown distribution is formulated, evaluated in terms of probability of error and compared to a matched filter detector in Gaussian noise.

Stereophonic Broadcasting Using Pulse-Amplitude Modulation

IRE Transactions on Broadcasting, 1960
For transmission of the two stereo signals of a stereophonic radio broadcast, a time multiplex method operating with pulse amplitude modulation is proposed. The transmitting principle is described. The questions of compatibility, transmitter excitation, baseband width and radio band width, signal-to-noise ratio for single-channel and stereo reception ...

Efficient design of waveforms for robust pulse amplitude modulation

IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2001
A large and flexible set of computationally efficient algorithms is developed for the design of waveforms for pulse amplitude modulation that provide robust performance in the presence of uncertainties in the channel and noise models. Performance is measured either by a sensitivity function for threshold detection or by the mean square error of the ...

Assessing Performance of Silicon Photonic Modulators for Pulse Amplitude Modulation

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2018
Silicon photonic (SiP) electro-optic modulators are a key component in cost-efficient and integrated optical transmitters. Modulator design traditionally uses figure of merits (FOMs) that characterize modulation efficiency and propagation loss of light, which underestimate the modulator-induced power penalty due to intersymbol interference, as they do ...

An autonomous and wireless pulse-amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorometer

tm - Technisches Messen, 2021
AbstractMeasuring chlorophyll fluorescence is an important tool in plant research, since it is a reliable non-invasive method for capturing photosynthetic efficiency of a plant and, hence, an indicator of plant stress/health. The principle of chlorophyll fluorometry is based on the optical illumination of a plant’s leaf at a certain wavelength, while ...

Successes in Application of Pulse-Amplitude Modulated Fluorescence

2015
Fluorescence is used not only in studying the functions of molecules, as demonstrated by the example of photosynthetic reactions (see Chap. 1), but also for an assessment of changes in molecular structure as a consequence of protein interactions with other molecules (e.g., with other proteins or DNA) or the influence of damaging agents such as ...

Detection of pulsed-amplitude and phase-modulated signals

Frontiers in Optics, 2003
We review the detection of pulsed optical data formats, focusing on on/off keying (OOK) and differential phase shift keying (DPSK). We point out the benefits of pulsed signal reception, and explain why balanced rather than single-ended detection should be used for DPSK.
