Design of Mixed-mode Systems for Pulse-shape Discrimination

2021 IEEE International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2021
The use of a mixed-mode system for performing neutron/gamma (n/γ) pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) is investigated. Historically, PSD capable systems have been composed fully of analog electronics or use fast digitizers that allow for later analysis using digital signal processing (DSP).

Pulse shape discrimination with a comparator circuit

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1970
Abstract The pulse shape discriminator described employs an integrated circuit differential comparator to measure the zero cross-over time of a bi-polar pulse relative to the start of the pulse. The comparator element operates over a dynamic range of 0.02 to 10 V with a time shift of less than 4 ns for DDL pulses with a rise time of 100 ns. The pulse

Pulse Shape Discrimination in Stilbene Scintillators

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1961
A simple, sensitive pulse shape discriminator is described, which was designed to permit detection of low energy neutrons in the presence of a very high γ-ray background, and at high counting rates. An improvement relative to discrimination circuits published so far was obtained by incorporating a fast crystal diode switch for the separation of the ...

A simple pulse-shape discrimination circuit

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1974
Abstract A simple pulse-shape discrimination circuit is described. Some results are presented for NE213 organic liquid scintillators of different sizes. The influence of the lower threshold energy and the effect of high counting rates on the pulse-shape discrimination properties are shown.

Tunnel diode pulse shape discriminator

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1967
Abstract A pulse shape discriminator is described which is suitable for neutron-gamma ray separation with several different detector types. It uses three tunnel diode discriminator circuits, one for setting an energy threshold, one for marking the leading edge setting an energy threshold, one for making the leading edge of the input signals and one ...

A high speed pulse shape discriminator

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1970
Abstract A high speed pulse shape discriminator utilizing the true zero crossover technique is described. Tunnel diodes are used in leading edge “anti-walk” timing and for zero crossover detection. The circuit has been used for n-γ discrimination applications with liquid scintillators and is demonstrated at rates above 8×10 4 cps.

Pulse Shape Discrimination in a Plastic Scintillator

IRE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1960
A plastic scintillator has been developed which shows a decay time dependent upon energy loss per unit distance, and hence is suitable for use with pulse shape discrimination methods. This scintillator was employed in conjunction with an improved discrimination system and the data were analyzed on a two-dimensional analyzer which provided a matrix of ...

A versatile electronic pulse-shape discriminator

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1989
Abstract A pulse-shape discrimination circuit designed for use with multidetector arrays has been tested. Each module, containing two channels, occupies a single slot in a standard nuclear instrumentation module (NIM) crate and can be used without alteration, tests have shown, with either NE213 liquid scintillator detectors for neutron-gamma ray ...

On the minimal threshold of pulse-shape discriminators

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1973
Abstract A theoretical analysis is given of the characteristics for pulse-shape discriminators used in fast neutron spectrometry (scintillation counters based on organic scintillators). Principally possible minimum thresholds for several discriminator types using the zero-cross method and the method of comparison of a full charge with its part are ...

Development of a pulse shape discrimination circuit

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1994
Abstract A pulse shape discrimination circuit was designed and used in an experiment measuring double-differential cross sections of (n, charged particle) reaction; to identify p, α and γ. The performance of the circuit was tested. With this circuit, excellent identification of p, α and γ was obtained.
