Multi-beam pulsed laser deposition for engineered crystal films

open access: yes, 2012
Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a quick, versatile technique for crystal film growth. Multi-beam PLD extends the basic PLD setup to include multiple lasers and targets, and has shown immense promise for the engineering of custom crystal films and ...

Microfabrication of Soft Millirobots Propelled by Low Voltage Electrohydraulic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Manual layer‐by‐layer assembly is replaced by wafer‐level MEMS batch fabrication for compliant polymer‐based electrohydraulic actuators. The microfabricated devices integrate sacrificially defined microcavities, Parylene‐C‐sealed inlets, and multilayer polymer–metal films.

Polaritonic Materials: A Comparative Study on the Relaxation Kinetics in Fabry–Perot versus Plasmonic Cavities

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Comparing Fabry–Perot and plasmonic nanorod cavities reveals how the number of dark states dictates polariton relaxation. The high number of dark states results in a polaritonic bottleneck, while reducing the number of dark states enables to measure the polaritonic decay.

Large‐Area Flat Optics Color Routing in Tilted Arrays of 2D Semiconductor Nanostripes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a scalable flat optics platform exploiting self‐organised ion‐beam sputtering and maskless glancing‐angle deposition to fabricate centimetre‐scale arrays of tilted MoS2 nanostripes. The engineered geometry activates Rayleigh anomalies, guided modes, and Mie resonances, enabling highly directional color routing and enhanced light harvesting ...

Surface strain measurement using pulsed laser shearography with fibre-optic imaging bundles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This thesis describes the development of a shearography instrument for the quantitative measurement of surface strain on dynamic test objects. Shearography is a non-contact, full-field interferometric speckle technique used for the measurement of ...

Bismuth Nanogratings With Narrow Plasmon Resonances for Dynamic Polarized Color Generation and Colorimetric Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Bismuth nanogratings are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition onto the nanostructured silver and polycarbonate surfaces of DVDs. They display spectrally‐narrow plasmon resonances yielding vivid colors, which are strongly sensitive to the polarization of light, angle of incidence, nature of the underlying surface and of the surrounding medium (air or ...

Colloidal Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles by Laser Ablation in Solvents for Plasmonic Applications

open access: yesNanomaterials
Titanium nitride (TiN) is a candidate material for several plasmonic applications, and pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) represents a rapid, scalable, and environmentally friendly approach for the large-scale production of nanomaterials with ...

Laser Polishing of Micro-Machined Microfluidic Molds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The objective of this paper is to explore the effective-ness of using a pulsed 1064 nm wavelength Nd:YAG laser to polish micro-machined metal molds. Polishing is desired to reduce the surface roughness of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) devices cast with ...

An On‐Demand Neuromorphic Vision System Enabled by a Multi‐Paradigm Neuromorphic Device and Hierarchical Reconfigurability Designed from Device to System Level

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An on‐demand ultra‐reconfigurable intelligent vision system with hierarchical reconfigurability from device to system levels is demonstrated. Through co‐design of a multi‐paradigm device, reconfigurable circuits, and adaptive system architecture/algorithms, the system enables seamless switching among spiking, non‐spiking, neuromorphic imaging (NI), and

Laser processing of solution based antimony doped tin oxide thin films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Antimony doped Tin oxide (SnO2:Sb, or ATO) is of interest as an alternative to Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) for large area optoelectronic applications. There is a particular interest in the potential for solution based coatings based on nanoparticulate ...
