Neuroimaging on the Evaluation of Death by Neurological Criteria: A Systematic Review With Real‐Life Insights

open access: yesClinical Neuroimaging, Volume 3, Issue 1, 2026.
ABSTRACT Neuroimaging plays a crucial role in determining brain death or death by neurological criteria (DNC). It helps establish the cause of irreversible brain injury, and when the clinical brain death exam cannot be completed, it can confirm the diagnosis of DNC. These imaging modalities, also called ancillary tests, have been widely studied, with a

Binocular Rivalry: Evaluating the Role of Theta Power as a Neural Index of Conflict

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
We report evidence for the involvement of cognitive conflict mechanisms (detection and resolution via functional inhibition of irrelevant information) during binocular rivalry. These dynamics were reflected in the EEG by differential modulations of conflict‐relevant oscillatory patterns to rivalrous versus non‐rivalrous stimuli, with higher fronto ...

Tonal Surprisal and Contextual Shifts Evoke Distinct Pupil Dilation During Dynamic Sound Sequences

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 1, January 2026.
Using pupil dilation and Bayesian modeling, we show that listeners track both momentary unexpectedness and the reliability of auditory contexts. Model‐based analyses reveal that tone‐by‐tone surprisal and contextual precision jointly shape arousal across dynamic auditory environments.

Pupillometry as tool to assess cognitive and affective processing in aging

open access: yesBrain Disorders
The present manuscript synthesizes research using pupillometry to assess cognitive and affective processing in the aging population. There are two main findings: first, pupil size tends to enlarge as the cognitive load increases in older adults and a ...

Evaluation of Cholinergic Deficiency in Preclinical Alzheimer’s Disease Using Pupillometry

open access: yesJournal of Ophthalmology, 2017
Cortical cholinergic deficiency is prominent in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and published findings of diminished pupil flash response in AD suggest that this deficiency may extend to the visual cortical areas and anterior eye.

Pupil reflex as a marker of activity and prognosis in heart failure: a longitudinal and prospective study

open access: yesESC Heart Failure
Aims Compensatory mechanisms in heart failure (HF) are triggered to maintain adequate cardiac output. Among them, hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is one of the main ones and carries a worse prognosis.

Dynamic pupillometry system

open access: yesJournal of Complexity in Health Sciences
The phenomena of miosis (constriction) and mydriasis (dilation) of the pupil are exhibited in response to varying levels of light intensity cast upon the eye. In general, the size and responsiveness of the human pupil are under the regulatory purview of the nervous system.
