Estimating the Purse Seine Net Geometry during a Hauling Operation Using a Data Assimilation Method

open access: yesFishes
The dynamics of fishing nets can be estimated by modeling and numerically computing the forces acting on them. However, the dynamic models of fishing nets are highly nonlinear owing to the significant influence of hydrodynamic forces acting on the net ...

Ontogeny of foraging behaviour in an opportunistic gull inhabiting urban marine ecosystems

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Urbanization affects ecosystems by reducing biodiversity and displacing species from native habitats. While some suffer, others, like urban wildlife, adapt through innovative feeding and behaviours that improve their fitness in human‐altered settings. Despite research on wildlife in urban areas, the development of foraging behaviour in urban species is

When is the bait worth the risk? A mechanistic model of a compensatory ecological trap in seabirds

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological traps occur when organisms preferentially select habitats that reduce fitness. In seabird–fishery systems, fishery‐derived trophic subsidies can increase foraging success, reinforce habitat preference and indirectly enhance reproductive output or recruitment,

The Momentum of ‘Developed’: Bodies of Water, Aging Bodies and Malta's Interventions at the UN

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract Histories of major powers continue to shape how many scholars conceptualize internationalism. By focusing on Malta's interventions at the UN challenges, this article challenges such narrative. In particular, it examines Arvid Pardo's 1967 petition that the seabed be reconceived and protected as the ‘common heritage of mankind’ and Vincent ...

The Mysterious Stranger and Modern Enchantment

open access: yesThe British Journal of Sociology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sociological accounts of modernity have long emphasized rationalization, alienation, and the attenuation of affective intensity. While these diagnoses capture crucial dynamics of modern social order, they leave underexplored a persistent and generative dimension of social life: enchantment.

Fishing Activity Affected Odontocete Cetacean Distribution in a Marine Protected Area in the East China Sea

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Spatiotemporal distribution of odontocete cetaceans within China's Jiushan Archipelago National Nature Reserve was investigated. Fishing vessels significantly reduced both cetacean acoustic detections and feeding activity, whereas gillnets selectively suppressed cetacean feeding behavior without affecting overall cetacean detection rates.

Fragment Edges Benefit a Common Predator of Pollinators via Bottom‐Up Effects

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
This study investigated the hypotheses regarding the effects of habitat fragmentation on spider biomass and causing bottom‐up or top‐down effects on multi‐trophic relationships. ABSTRACT Defaunation following habitat fragmentation typically threatens predators at higher trophic levels, which further alter prey and plants via top‐down effects.
