Avian influenza overview June–August 2026

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Between 5 June and 28 August 2026, 110 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus detections were reported in domestic (7) and wild (103) birds in 12 countries in Europe. The number of detections remained at a seasonal low throughout the summer, continuing the decline observed since spring.

Comparative nasal and anal microbiomes in sympatric ringed and harbour seals: insights into host adaptation and niche differentiationComparative nasal and anal microbiomes in sympatric ringed and harbour seals: insights into host adaptation and niche differentiation [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Understanding the microbiomes of marine mammals is essential to explore their health, ecological roles and responses to environmental change. We investigated the nasal and anal microbiota of two sympatric subarctic seals, the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina)

Revisiting the status of the Arctic's Last Ice Area as a refuge for marine predators

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract The Last Ice Area (LIA), located north of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and Greenland, has the Arctic's oldest and thickest sea ice. The LIA is hypothesized to be a potential climate refuge for ice‐dependent top predators as Arctic sea ice continues to decline.

Weather Effects on the Haul‐Out Behaviour of Ringed Seals in the Amundsen Gulf

open access: yesMarine Ecology, Volume 47, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
ABSTRACT Ringed seals (Pusa hispida) use sea ice year‐round in the Arctic as a platform for giving birth, raising young and moulting. Arctic ringed seal population assessments are typically conducted by aerial surveys flown in the spring, when many seals haul out. However, many factors can influence whether a seal is hauled out on the ice and available

Summer habitat selection by ringed seals (Pusa hispida) in the drifting sea ice of the northern Barents Sea

open access: yesPolar Research, 2019
Ringed seals are a central component of the Arctic ecosystem; they have a circumpolar distribution and are both important predators of lower trophic animals (invertebrates and fishes) and prey for polar bears and coastal human populations. They depend on

The ecological and behavioral significance of short-term food caching in polar bears (Ursus maritimus)

open access: yesArctic Science, 2020
The paucity of observations of wild polar bears (Ursus maritimus) caching of food (including hoarding, i.e., burying and remaining with a kill for up to a few days) has led to the conclusion that such behavior does not occur or is negligible in this ...

A temporal shift in trophic diversity among a predator assemblage in a warming Arctic [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Climate change is leading to northward shifts in species distributions that is altering interspecific interactions at low- and mid-trophic levels. However, little attention has been focused on the effects of redistributions of species on the trophic ...

Avian influenza overview March–May 2026

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 24, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Between 28 February and 4 June 2026, 949 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) virus detections were reported in domestic (186) and wild (763) birds in 30 countries in Europe. The downward trend in the number of detections observed at the end of the previous reporting period continued and is expected to persist throughout the summer ...

A Bayesian approach to include Indigenous Knowledge and satellite telemetry data in habitat selection functions

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 6, June 2026.
Our work points to the importance of both Western science and IK data sources in models used for conservation and management decisions. We show how the models that include the IK result in more informed predictions and the value of IK when predicting important areas for species that may be relied upon for conservation and management decisions.
