The energy demand of fast neuronal network oscillations: insights from brain slice preparations

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2012
Fast neuronal network oscillations in the gamma range (30-100 Hz) in the cerebral cortex have been implicated in higher cognitive functions such as sensual perception, working memory, and, perhaps, consciousness. However, little is known about the energy

Radiative Thermal Management for Extreme Environments: Mechanisms and Design Strategies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss the fundamental mechanisms of radiative cooling and solar heating, material and structural design strategies, hybrid approaches integrating additional heat transfer pathways, and durability‐oriented designs addressing environmental stresses.

High-frequency oscillations and sequence generation in two-population models of hippocampal region CA1.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2022
Hippocampal sharp wave/ripple oscillations are a prominent pattern of collective activity, which consists of a strong overall increase of activity with superimposed (140 - 200 Hz) ripple oscillations.

Inverse Design of Nanoparticulate Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inverse design shifts nanomaterial development from empirical trial‐and‐error to predictive model‐driven strategies. It can rely on knowledge‐based, data‐based, or hybrid process and property functions. This perspective article provides a practical framework for applying inverse design based on instructive examples. It discusses which modeling approach

Functional effects of distinct innervation styles of pyramidal cells by fast spiking cortical interneurons

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Inhibitory interneurons target precise membrane regions on pyramidal cells, but differences in their functional effects on somata, dendrites and spines remain unclear.

Conformal Coating and Transfer of 2D Nanomaterials via Dynamic Interface Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This review discusses conformal coating and transfer of two‐dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with a focus on dynamic interface engineering. By actively regulating nanosheet transport and interfacial contact during film formation, recent dynamic coating strategies overcome the limitations of conventional passive approaches and enable geometry‐adaptive ...

The Effect of Single Pyramidal Neuron Firing Within Layer 2/3 and Layer 4 in Mouse V1

open access: yesFrontiers in Neural Circuits, 2018
The influence of cortical cell spiking activity on nearby cells has been studied extensively in vitro. Less is known, however, about the impact of single cell firing on local cortical networks in vivo.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Enhances the Vascular Organization and Contractile Performance of Fibrin‐Gelatin‐Based Engineered Cardiac Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Fibrin–gelatin hydrogels functionalized with reduced graphene oxide create a mechanically stable and bioactive 3D environment for engineered cardiac tissue. The composite matrix promotes endothelial lumen formation, enhances sarcomeric protein expression, and increases contractile performance of embedded cardiomyocytes.

Excitatory Microcircuits within Superficial Layers of the Medial Entorhinal Cortex

open access: yesCell Reports, 2017
The distinctive firing pattern of grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) supports its role in the representation of space. It is widely believed that the hexagonal firing field of grid cells emerges from neural dynamics that depend on the local
