Fluorometric assay of pyridoxal and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate
Analytical Biochemistry, 1979Abstract A new and very sensitive fluorometric method for the determination of pyridoxal and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate is reported. The specificity is based on the reductive amination of pyridoxal and its 5′-phosphate with methyl anthranilate and sodium cyanoborohydride at pH 4,5 to 5,0.

Inhibition of gaba binding by pyridoxal and pyridoxal phosphate
International Journal of Biochemistry, 1980Abstract 1. 1. GABA exerts its neuroinhibitory effects by binding to a specific receptor on the post-synaptic membrane. 2. 2. Since both GABA and vitamin B 6 have been implicated in convulsion, the effects of B 6 vitamers on Na-independent binding of GABA was investigated by incubating synaptic membrane suspensions for 5 min at 4°C in 1 ml ...

Pyridoxal phosphate: Biosynthesis and catabolism
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Proteins and Proteomics, 2011Vitamin B(6) is an essential cofactor that participates in a large number of biochemical reactions. Pyridoxal phosphate is biosynthesized de novo by two different pathways (the DXP dependent pathway and the R5P pathway) and can also be salvaged from the environment.

DRUG-PYRIDOXAL PHOSPHATE INTERACTIONS
Drug Metabolism and Drug Interactions, 1982In this review it has been pointed out that vitamin B6 and its vitamers can be involved in many interactions with a number of drugs, as well as with the actions of various endocrines and neurotransmitters. Nutritional deficiencies, especially of vitamins and proteins, can affect the manner in which drugs undergo biotransformation, and thereby may also ...

The interactions between biogenic amines and pyridoxal, pyridoxal phosphate, and pyridoxal kinase
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1972Abstract The effect of biogenic amines on pyridoxal kinase activity has been investigated in vitro . Experiments with a purified beef brain pyridoxal kinase indicate that 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa), dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin inhibit the reaction, while tyrosine, tryptophan, and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) have no effect. However,

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), the catalytically active form of vitamin B6, plays a crucial role in several cellular processes. In most organisms, PLP is recycled from nutrients and degraded B6-enzymes in a salvage pathway that involves pyridoxal kinase (PLK), pyridoxine phosphate oxidase and phosphatase activities.

Effect of vanadate and pyridoxal phosphate on S-adenosylmethionine
International Journal of Biochemistry, 1985Vanadate in the presence of pyridoxal phosphate promotes the decarboxylation of S-adenosylmethionine. Pyridoxal has a lower effect; pyridoxine none. The rate of decarboxylation depends on pyridoxal phosphate and vanadate concentration. Vanadate as low as 10(-7) M gives significant decarboxylation.

Pyridoxal phosphate as a probe of reovirus transcriptase
Biochemistry, 1980The ribonucleoprotein core of reovirus is a multienzyme complex that transcribes messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) from double-stranded RNA templates. So far, the core has resisted attempts to disassemble it and identify the polypeptide species responsible for RNA polymerase activity. As an alternative approach, we tested pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP) as

REGULATION AND FUNCTION OF PYRIDOXAL PHOSPHATE IN CNS
Neurochemistry International, 1981Pyridoxal phosphate and pyridoxamine phosphate, the catalytically active forms of vitamin B(6), influence brain function by participating at stages in metabolism of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, other coenzymes and hormones. Vitamin B(6) participates in the metabolism of amino acids in the form of decarboxylation, transamination, deamination ...

Inhibition of phenol sulfotransferase by pyridoxal phosphate
Biochemical Pharmacology, 1994The biologically abundant cofactor, pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), is a potent inhibitor of bovine phenol (aryl) sulfotransferase (PST). Preincubation of purified enzyme with as little as 1 microM PLP decreased PST activity by 50%. Excess 2-naphthol protected PST from inactivation by PLP, whereas 2-naphthyl sulfate and PAPS were not protective.
