Pythium rot of chingensai ( Brassica campestris L. chinensis group) caused by Pythium ultimum var. ultimum and Pythium aphanidermatum

Severe rot was found at the base of leaves and stems of chingensai (Brassica campestris L. chinensis group) in Okayama Prefecture in 2000. The causal fungi were morphologically identified as Pythium ultimum Trow var. ultimum and P. aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzpatrick. Pythium dimorphum from rhododendron

A pythiaceous phycomycete was isolated from diseased roots of rhododendron in New York. It was characterized by fast growth, preference for high temperature for growth, ovoid to elongate, non-papillate, internally proliferating sporangia and large spherical, pigmented chlamydospores, but failed to produce sex organs in single or dual cultures.
