Students' developing knowledge in a subject discipline: insights from combining quantitative and qualitative methods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In this paper we describe an example of research that combined quantitative and qualitative methods in order to investigate students' developing mathematical reasoning over time and to identify factors that were influential in this ...

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Quantitative stability for the nonlocal overdetermined Serrin problem [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We establish quantitative stability for the nonlocal Serrin overdetermined problem, via the method of the moving planes. Interestingly, our stability estimate is even better than those obtained so far in the classical setting (i.e., for the classical Laplacian) via the method of the moving planes.

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Rapid quantitative pharmacodynamic imaging by a novel method: theory, simulation testing and proof of principle [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ 1:e117, 2013, 2013
Pharmacological challenge imaging has mapped, but rarely quantified, the sensitivity of a biological system to a given drug. We describe a novel method called rapid quantitative pharmacodynamic imaging. This method combines pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling, repeated small doses of a challenge drug over a short time scale, and functional imaging

A cellular system to study responses to a collision between the transcription complex and a protein‐bound nick in the DNA template

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present the cellular transcription‐coupled Flp‐nick system allowing the introduction of a Top1‐mimicking cleavage complex (Flpcc) at a Flp recognition target site within a controllable LacZ gene. LacZ transcription leads to the collision of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) with Flpcc, and this causes RNAPII stalling, ubiquitination, and degradation.

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

A revision of Altman Z-Score model and a comparative analysis of Turkish companies' financial distress prediction

open access: yesNational Accounting Review, 2021
This paper aims to predict companies' financial distress situation with the use of four different models; Altman Z score, Revised Altman Z Score (Linear Discriminant Analysis) and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis, Random Forest Machine Learning Model with

Contrast-Agnostic Groupwise Registration by Robust PCA for Quantitative Cardiac MRI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Quantitative cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an increasingly important diagnostic tool for cardiovascular diseases. Yet, co-registration of all baseline images within the quantitative MRI sequence is essential for the accuracy and precision of quantitative maps.
