Case‐only design identifies interactions of genetic risk variants at SIGLEC5 and PLG with the lncRNA CTD‐2353F22.1 implying the importance of periodontal wound healing for disease aetiology

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Periodontology, Volume 50, Issue 1, Page 90-101, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim The basis of phenotypic variation of periodontitis is genetic variability. Disease relevant effects of individual risk alleles are considered to result from genetic interactions. We investigated gene × gene (G×G) interactions of suggestive periodontitis susceptibility alleles.

Serum Collagen Biomarkers Are Reflective of Tissue Specific Fibroblasts Associated With Ulcerative Colitis Activity and Treatment Response to Ustekinumab

open access: yesUnited European Gastroenterology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background There is a need to identify peripheral biomarkers reflective of defined disease associated fibroblasts in Ulcerative Colitis (UC), with the aim of enabling clinical development approaches for novel‐stromal‐targeted therapeutics for individuals at risk for fibrostenotic complications.

To self or not to self? Absence of mate choice despite costly outcrossing in the fungus Podospora anserina

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 1, Page 238-250, January 2023., 2023
Two Podospora anserina mycelia growing in contact. The position of fruiting bodies (black dots) forming rings away from the contact zone indicates the absence of outcrossing between the two mycelia. Abstract Fungi have a large potential for flexibility in their mode of sexual reproduction, resulting in mating systems ranging from haploid selfing to ...

Threats to cycad biocultural heritage in the Amami Islands, Japan

open access: yesPlant Species Biology, EarlyView.
The central point we seek to frame in this article is that the increasing infestations of cycad aulacaspis scale in the Amami guntō existentially threaten not only the islands' sotetsu but rather entire cultural systems and natural ecologies that have developed around these plants.
