One H2 molecule per ten million H atoms reveals sub-parsec-scale cold overdensities at z ∼ 4★

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
We present the detection and analysis of H2 absorption at z = 4.24 towards the bright quasar J 0007−5705, which was observed with the Very Large Telescope as part of the ESPRESSO QUasar Absorption Line Survey (EQUALS). The high resolving power of R ≈ 120

SDSS J115517.35+634622.0: A Newly Discovered Gravitationally Lensed Quasar

open access: yes, 2003
We report the discovery of SDSSJ115517.35+634622.0, a previously unknown gravitationally lensed quasar. The lens system exhibits two images of a $z = 2.89$ quasar, with an image separation of $1{\farcs}832 \pm 0.007$ .

Highly Ionized Gas in the Zone of Avoidance: Using the CIViL⋆ Survey to Pinpoint Physical Conditions of Gaseous Halos

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
This paper investigates the physical conditions of the circumgalactic medium of L ^⋆ galaxies through explorations of observed ion tracer gas kinematics and comparisons of observations to different ionization models.

The gas and stellar mass of low-redshift damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers

open access: yes, 2017
We report Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph far-ultraviolet and Arecibo Telescope H{\sc i} 21cm spectroscopic studies of six damped and sub-damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs and sub-DLAs, respectively) at $z \lesssim 0.1$, that have ...

Galaxy–Absorber Association in the Epoch of Reionization: Galactic Population Luminosity Distribution for Different Absorbers at 10 ≥ z ≥ 5.5

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
How do galaxies of different luminosities contribute to the metal absorber populations of varying species and strength? We present our analysis of the predicted metal contributions from galaxies as observed in quasar absorption line spectra during the ...

High redshift radio galaxies

open access: yes, 2000
There is considerable evidence that powerful radio quasars and radio galaxies are orientation-dependent manifestations of the same parent population: massive spheroids containing correspondingly massive black holes.

Circumnuclear Gas of a Quasar in Absorption and Emission Lines

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a detailed analysis of the unusual absorption- and emission-line spectrum of the quasar SDSS J074850.39+442439.0 (hereafter J0748+4424) at a redshift of z = 2.18. The archival SDSS optical spectrum is abundant in narrow absorption lines (NALs)

The Distance to the Magellanic Stream: Constraints from Optical Absorption along Stellar Sight Lines

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Magellanic Stream is a large tail of neutral and ionized gas originating from tidal and hydrodynamical interactions between the Magellanic Clouds as they orbit the Milky Way (MW).

Peculiar Broad Absorption Line Quasars found in DPOSS

open access: yes, 2003
With the recent release of large (i.e., > hundred million objects), well-calibrated photometric surveys, such as DPOSS, 2MASS, and SDSS, spectroscopic identification of important targets is no longer a simple issue. In order to enhance the returns from a
