From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

Grip and Grasp: Lizard Claw Inspired Robotic Manipulators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Our study identifies the most effective lizard claw shape for use as an end effector in a bioinspired robotic manipulator. By examining key geometric features and combining them into comparative indices, the Crotaphytus collaris claw is found to be the best fit.

The Burbea-Rao and Bhattacharyya centroids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We study the centroid with respect to the class of information-theoretic Burbea-Rao divergences that generalize the celebrated Jensen-Shannon divergence by measuring the non-negative Jensen difference induced by a strictly convex and differentiable ...

Insights Into CO2 Loss, pH Effects, and Tafel Kinetics in Ni Single Atom‐Driven Bicarbonate Electroreduction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Selective CO formation in bicarbonate electrolysis is achieved by retaining reactive CO2 and tuning pH, while the competing hydrogen evolution reaction occurs at the interface. The rate‐determining step couples the chemical equilibrium of bicarbonate/CO2 with electrochemical charge transfer, offering insight into optimizing reaction conditions for ...

Accuracy and Stability of Computing High-Order Derivatives of Analytic Functions by Cauchy Integrals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
High-order derivatives of analytic functions are expressible as Cauchy integrals over circular contours, which can very effectively be approximated, e.g., by trapezoidal sums.

Interval-type theorems concerning quasi-arithmetic means [PDF]

open access: yesMathematical Inequalities & Applications, 2019
Family of quasi-arithmetic means has a natural, partial order (point-wise order) $A^{[f]}\le A^{[g]}$ if and only if $A^{[f]}(v)\le A^{[g]}(v)$ for all admissible vectors $v$ ($f,\,g$ and, later, $h$ are continuous and monotone and defined on a common interval).

A Large‐Area Broadband Multimodal Dual‐Resonant Haptic Device for Bidirectional Telerobotic and Augmented Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We present a large‐area bidirectional human–machine interface integrating electrostatic multimodal tactile sensing with a dual‐resonant haptic actuator. The system enables linear pressure sensing that is decoupled from actuation and stable broadband vibrotactile feedback under dynamic contact conditions, supporting real‐time feedback modulation aligned

Quasi-arithmetische Mittelwerte und Normalverteilung [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
J.M. Keynes (1911) shows how distributions look like for which the arithmetic, the geometric and the harmonic mean are most probable values. We propose a general class of distributions for which the quasi-arithmetic means are ML-estimators such that ...

Thermal equilibration between two quantum systems

open access: yes, 2011
Two identical finite quantum systems prepared initially at different temperatures, isolated from the environment, and subsequently brought into contact are demonstrated to relax towards Gibbs-like quasi-equilibrium states with a common temperature and ...
