Impact of extent of disease on 1‐year healthcare costs in patients who undergo cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases: retrospective observational cohort study

Well selected patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases can be treated with curative intent by cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Treatment‐related healthcare costs are significantly increased among patients with extensive peritoneal disease, although the associated survival gain is limited.

Following propensity adjustment for stage, age and sex, neoadjuvant therapy was not associated with survival. Tumour regression is a powerful prognostic indicator, and future research should focus on identifying patients who will derive the most benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
