Divergent Expectations, R & D Expenditures and Technical Progress
This paper deals with the problem of whether diversity of beliefs or consensus leads to a higher level of R and D spending in an industry, or a faster rate of technical progress, or a lower price for the industry's product. The answer depends upon characteristics of the demand function for industry output as well as the density functions reflecting ...

The tax treatment of R&D expenditures of multinational enterprises [PDF]
Abstract This paper investigates the tax treatment by national governments of R&D expenditures of multinational enterprises. In a noncooperative world, the international tax system is generally shown to discourage R&D investments by multinational firms.

In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Innovation and welfare: the marriage of an unlikely couple
Studies on innovation and welfare are seemingly unrelated and, currently, scholars of innovation and welfare form distinctive groups. However, recent developments in the fields of business and psychology suggest that a social safety net and the positive ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Regional financing for research and development expenditure
Following the loss of competitiveness of most European countries with respect to the other major economic powers since the 1970s, as part of its “Europe 2020” programme, the European Union has set the objective to allocate 3% of the GDP to research and ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
