An Active-Sterile Neutrino Transformation Solution for r-Process Nucleosynthesis

open access: yes, 1999
We discuss how matter-enhanced active-sterile neutrino transformation in both neutrino and antineutrino channels could enable the production of the rapid neutron capture (r-process) nuclei in neutrino-heated supernova ejecta.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

A holistic abundance analysis of r-rich stars

open access: yes, 2010
The chemical abundances of metal-poor stars are an excellent test bed by which to set new constraints on models of neutron-capture processes at low metallicity.

Location of the neutron drip line for Sn and its impact on r-process abundances

open access: yesPhysics Letters B
Nuclear physical inputs are critical for predicting the abundance of r-process elements. Extensive sensitivity studies have recently been performed to gauge the impact of the individual properties of nuclei on the r-process.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Approaching r-process nuclei at N = 126

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2012
The production of heavy neutron-rich nuclei approaching the r-process waiting point at N≈126 has been investigated in fragmentation reactions of relativistic 238U and 208Pb projectiles. Using this technique we were able to identify 73 new heavy neutron-rich nuclei expanding considerably the north-west frontier of the chart of nuclide. Moreover, we were

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The sensitivity of r-process nucleosynthesis to the properties of neutron-rich nuclei

open access: yes, 2013
About half of the heavy elements in the Solar System were created by rapid neutron capture, or r-process, nucleosynthesis. In the r-process, heavy elements are built up via a sequence of neutron captures and beta decays in which an intense neutron flux ...
