A rapid change in virulence gene expression during the transition from the intestinal lumen into tissue promotes systemic dissemination of Salmonella. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Bacterial pathogens causing systemic disease commonly evolve from organisms associated with localized infections but differ from their close relatives in their ability to overcome mucosal barriers by mechanisms that remain incompletely understood.

Tiny carriers, big impact: How Fusobacterium nucleatum extracellular vesicles drive oral diseases and beyond

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
This review explores how Fusobacterium nucleatum extracellular vesicles drive local oral diseases and distal pathologies via sophisticated cross‐compartment cross talk. It highlights the transformative potential of these “tiny carriers” as next‐generation molecular intermediaries for advanced health monitoring and innovative bio‐interventions by ...

Duplex Recombinase Polymerase Amplification‐Lateral Flow Assay for Rapid Visual Detection of Critical Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae From Positive Blood Cultures

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, EarlyView.
This study developed a pair of duplex RPA‐LFA assays for the simultaneous detection of critical resistance genes, blaCTX‐M/mcr‐1 and blaoxa‐48‐like/blaNDM, from hemoculture samples. Under optimized conditions, duplex RPA was performed at 37°C–38°C for 25 min, followed by LFA for 10–15 min.

Cancer pain: current practice and emerging targets

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Cancer pain (CP) arises from a complex interplay between the tumour and its microenvironment. Many patients experience a mixed pain phenotype that encompasses nociceptive, neuropathic and neuroinflammatory mechanisms, and vary across tumour type and disease stage. Despite decades of intensive research, the mainstay of cancer pain treatment is still non‐

Epidemic multiple drug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium causing invasive disease in sub-Saharan Africa have a distinct genotype

open access: yes, 2009
Whereas most nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) are associated with gastroenteritis, there has been a dramatic increase in reports of NTS-associated invasive disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolates are responsible for a

Korat‐Scrub Typhus Score: A Clinical Tool for Predicting Scrub Typhus in Patients With Acute Undifferentiated Febrile Illness

open access: yesTropical Medicine &International Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Scrub typhus is a major cause of acute undifferentiated febrile illness (AUFI) in the Asia–Pacific region. Nonspecific presentation, limited diagnostic accuracy and delayed treatment increase morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to develop a simple clinical score for early diagnosis in adults with AUFI. Methods A cross‐sectional
