Raios-x: fascinação, medo e ciência X-rays: fascination, fear and science

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2009
This work presents the discovery and the use of x-rays at the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century. X-rays greatly impacted science and everyday life. Their existence broke the idea that knowledge had reached a limiting step. In general,

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for inoperable early stage lung cancer.

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 2010
CONTEXT Patients with early stage but medically inoperable lung cancer have a poor rate of primary tumor control (30%-40%) and a high rate of mortality (3-year survival, 20%-35%) with current management.

Unveiling Magnetic Dipole Radiation in Phase-Reversal Leaky-Wave Antennas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The radiation principle of travelling-wave type phase-reversal antennas is explained in details, unveiling the presence of magnetic-dipole radiation in addition to well-known electric dipole radiation.

The Radiation of the Stars [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1917
I AM in general agreement with Mr. Jeans's remarks on the difficulty of obtaining a source of stellar energy more powerful than the Helmholtz contraction. It may be added that there is a conceivable source, which was, I believe, once suggested by Mr. Jeans himself, viz.

Radiation and pregnancy [PDF]

open access: yesObstetrical & Gynecological Survey, 1973
Irradiation during pregnancy may occur either as the result of radioactive pollution of the environment, or during a medical procedure using x-rays or radionuclides. While the former is usually unforeseeable, the latter is known and accepted by both physician and patient.Recent statistics estimate that about one quarter of pregnant women have had a ...

Multidimensional OMICs reveal ARID1A orchestrated control of DNA damage, splicing, and cell cycle in normal‐like and malignant urothelial cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the frequently mutated chromatin remodeler ARID1A, a subunit of the SWI/SNF cBAF complex, results in less open chromatin, alternative splicing, and the failure to stop cells from progressing through the cell cycle after DNA damage in bladder (cancer) cells. Created in BioRender. Epigenetic regulators, such as the SWI/SNF complex, with important

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.
