Composition‐Tuned Enhancement of the Anomalous Nernst Effect in FeCo–Pt Thin Films on Rigid and Flexible Substrates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Disordered (Fe50Co50)1−xPtx thin films exhibit a pronounced anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) with a strong composition dependence on both rigid and flexible substrates. The transverse thermoelectric response peaks near 22.5 at.% Pt, accompanied by enhanced αxy/σxy scaling, thermal transport, and ANE sensitivity.

Ce doped SiO2 optical fibers for remote radiation sensing and measurement

open access: yes, 2009
Scintillating materials, able to efficiently operate the conversion of energy absorbed in the form of ionizing radiation into light in the visible UV interval, are presently used in a wide class of applications as medical imaging, industrial inspection ...

Radiation damage in the LHCb vertex locator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The LHCb Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon strip detector designed to reconstruct charged particle trajectories and vertices produced at the LHCb interaction region. During the first two years of data collection, the 84 VELO sensors have been exposed to

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Natural healing behavior of gamma radiation induced defects in multicomponent phosphate glasses used for high energy UV lasers

open access: yes, 2017
Obvious healing behavior of gamma radiation induced defects in multicomponent phosphate glass was observed at room temperature. The recovery of the defects depends on the ratio of H3BO3/SiO2 in the investigated glasses, the total gamma radiation dose ...

Dynamic Microstructural Evolution of Graphite under Displacing Irradiation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Graphitic materials and graphite composites experience dimensional change when exposed to radiation-induced atomic displacements. This has major implications for current and future technological ranging from nuclear fission reactors to the processing ...

Birth Defects Res A Clin Mol Teratol [PDF]

open access: yes
BackgroundAn increasing number of radiologic exams are performed in the United States, but very few studies have examined the effects of maternal exposure to radiologic exams during the periconceptional period and birth defects.ObjectivesTo assess the ...

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...

Extended defects in curved spacetimes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
This Thesis is concerned with three particular aspects of extended cosmic strings and domain walls in cosmology: their dynamics, gravitation and interaction with a black hole. In Chapter 3, we study the dynamics of an abelian-Higgs cosmic string. We find
