5G Fronthaul Enabled by WDM Radio-over-Fiber

Frontiers in Optics / Laser Science, 2020
We propose a low-cost DML-based hybrid fiber-wireless WDM radio-over-fiber transmission system for 5G fronthaul networks with resource allocation flexibility under different traffic loads and demonstrate it with a proof-of-concept experiment.

Low-Cost Radio-over-Fiber links

LEOS 2007 - IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2007
Radio-over-fiber links based on directly modulated lasers for low-cost designs are reviewed. Multimode fiber transmission with VCSELs is promising and is focused on. Key system aspects are investigated and RF transmission over long distances is demonstrated.

Radio over Fiber for Broadband Communications

2009
The high capacity offered by the optical fiber, combined with the mobility and the flexibility of wireless access, either fixed or not, provides an efficient approach to alleviating the requirements posed by the envisaged provision of any-service, anytime and anywhere, next generation communication networks.

Predistortion of Radio Over Fiber Links: Algorithms, Implementation, and Measurements

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers, 2012
Distributed antenna systems (DASs) have been proposed for use in high-data-rate wireless communications. Connecting the central unit to remote antenna units, radio over fiber (RoF) links become essential parts of the DAS. One of the major problems in the RoF links is the nonlinear distortion experienced in its optoelectronic devices.

DWDM aspects of radio-over-fiber

LEOS 2000. 2000 IEEE Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings. 13th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 2000 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.00CH37080), 2002
Fixed wireless access provides an attractive option for 'last mile' delivery of broadband services in urban areas. The availability of spectrum in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band allows delivery of digital voice, video and data services. Optical transport may play an important role in point-to-multipoint (PMP) fixed wireless access systems by ...
