The variability of rainfall acidity

Canadian Journal of Statistics, 1983
AbstractTwo years of rainfall acidity data for the eastern United States were analyzed. The data consist of rainfall‐event pH measurements from a nine station monitoring network. A spatio‐temporal stochastic model, including deterministic components for seasonal variation and rainfall washout, and stochastic components for spatial, temporal, and ...

Rainfall Variability in Africa

Monthly Weather Review, 1979
Abstract Time series of annual rainfall for 69 stations in Africa were analyzed for trends and periodicities. Trend analysis showed that most of the annual series indicate some forms of oscillations rather than any particular trend. Use of binomial coefficients to smooth the series indicated positive or negative trends in recent years in 20 series, but

A Peculiarity in Rainfall Variability

Nature, 1941
A SOMEWHAT perplexing and highly interesting peculiarity in the regimen of rainfall variation is this: all over the world, there is a much greater degree of uniformity in the relative variability of annual rainfall expressed as a percentage of the normal than in the absolute variability expressed as the actual deviation from the normal in inches or ...

Rainfall fluctuations and sunspot variability

Archives for Meteorology, Geophysics, and Bioclimatology Series B, 1982
Mean monthly values of sunspot relative numbers and 290 precipitation records are investigated and compared by means of power-spectrum, numerical band-pass filter and cross-spectrum analysis. Spectral-analysis of variance and numerical bandpass filtering indicate significant cyclical variance components in the time scale of solar activity at some ...

The Diurnal Variability of Florida Rainfall

Monthly Weather Review, 1979
Abstract The diurnal variation of precipitation over the Florida peninsula is investigated on the basis of harmonic analysis of hourly rainfall data. Hourly data on the frequency of three categories of precipitation events for around 70 stations in Florida were processed, generating statistics of amplitude and phase of the diurnal precipitation cycle ...

The variability of rainfall acidity revisited

Canadian Journal of Statistics, 1988
AbstractSix years of rainfall‐event pH measurements from the nine‐station MAP3S/PCN monitoring network in the eastern United States were analyzed. The initial objective was an attempted validation of the model developed by Eynon and Switzer (1983, Canad. J. Statist. 11, 11–24) on this independent data set.

Representation of Spatial Variability of Rainfall in Aggregated Rainfall‐Runoff Models

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1994
The aggregated‐precipitation input to a catchment is defined in this work as one that minimizes an objective measure of the difference between the calculated and the observed hydrograph. This measure is different from the evaluated mean areal precipitation using, for example, Thiessen polygons.
